LEGO CON will not return in 2023

The LEGO Group has confirmed that LEGO CON will not return in 2023, though has stressed that the concept hasn’t been cancelled altogether.

The livestreamed event originally debuted in 2021, featuring new products, interviews with LEGO designers, build challenges and celebrity hosts. Given it was designed for kids and families first and foremost, however, the reception from adult fans was less than positive – leading the LEGO Group to rethink its approach for LEGO CON 2022.

The result was an event that went down much better with fans of all ages, largely thanks to the addition of genuinely new set reveals (including 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle and 75337 AT-TE). But it apparently wasn’t enough to guarantee the return of LEGO CON for 2023, because the LEGO Group has now shared (via the LEGO Ambassador Network) that the summer show won’t be returning next year.

The engagement team has insisted as part of that announcement that ‘cancelled is not the right word’, however, instead suggesting that ‘paused’ or ‘hiatus’ might be a more accurate descriptor of the situation. That indicates LEGO CON isn’t dead and buried as a concept, but could still return in 2024 or beyond – whether in its current form or as something entirely different.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
