LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Exotic Parrots go head-to-head: blue or pink?
Two different shades of LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Exotic Parrot sets have flown on to shelves in 2023, but which is top of the pecking order? We place them head to head to find out…
LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31136 Exotic Parrot arrived online and in stores back in March of this year, with the 253-piece build offering up a trio of brightly-coloured creatures to create. We reviewed that set right here, stating that the menagerie of models made for ‘impressive display pieces when completed’.
Then, in a surprise move in June, the LEGO Group announced that yet another version of the build would be released, in the shape of 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot. Arriving on August 1, the latest iteration of the three animals swapped out many of the existing elements with new colours, offering builders what’s essentially a near-identical companion piece to 31136 Exotic Parrot.

Both LEGO Creator 3-in-1 models include the option to construct either a poseable parrot on a tree branch, a swimming fish or a tropical frog. All of the pieces included in the sets are identical, other than the swap from a primarily blue, yellow and green palette in 31136 Exotic Parrot to a bright pink, blue and teal colour scheme with 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot.
The building experience is exactly the same, regardless of which of the three animals you decide to start with, although 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot does have one slight and oddly-puzzling cosmetic deviation. When making the tropical fish, a handful of elements on top of the green display base for the creature have been swapped around.

This means that a dark green slope piece has been placed facing forward beneath the mouth of the fish, with a brown round brick with axle hole sitting behind it. There doesn’t seem to be any particular reason for this revised configuration, other than to slightly differentiate 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot from 31136 Exotic Parrot.
Beyond that, it’s merely the palette-swapped looks of the two LEGO Creator 3-in-1 sets that separate the models, offering builders a particularly tricky purchasing dilemma. Pick up one of the sets, and if so which one, or just buy both of them to add to your collection?

The choice is ultimately a personal one, although we wouldn’t be at all surprised if some folks opted to shell out for 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot and 31136 Exotic Parrot in one go, with the low price point for the models unlikely to break anyone’s bank.
If that’s the case, then what you’re essentially looking at are two bookended companion pieces that really do complement each other very well. While 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot comes across as being the more vibrant and striking of the builds, both LEGO Creator 3-in-1 sets do a good job of emulating the eye-catching colours of each real-world creature and make for impressive display models.

Of course, these aren’t the first such palette-swapped LEGO Creator and Creator Expert models to be released, with alternate versions of 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs and 10271 Fiat 500 having launched in 2021. It’s therefore reasonable to assume we may get to see more such companion sets with alternate colours arriving at some point in the future, but it’s impossible to say for sure.
Both 31136 Exotic Parrot and 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot are currently available for purchase online and in stores, with the two sets also qualifying for the double LEGO Insiders points offer that’s currently running until October 15, 2023.
