LEGO Disney accessory sets are a source of rare characters, but not minifigures

The current era of LEGO Disney has recurring accessory sets that are proving to be a good source of rare characters, just not as minifigures.

The recent reveal of 43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes may remind you of 43237 Isabela’s Flowerpot and 43239 Mirabel’s Photo Frame and Jewelry Box, both of which also came with a mini-doll based on a new Disney movie with one other figure in 43239 Mirabel’s Photo Frame and Jewelry Box.

These three sets appear to be the start of a new collection of LEGO Disney sets designed to be placed on a desk or somewhere within reach to interact with them. Whether they continue concepts from LEGO DOTS or not, they have one crucial thing in common – rare or entirely exclusive LEGO characters.

Aside from Mirabel in 43239 Mirabel’s Photo Frame and Jewelry Box, Isabel, Anxiety and Joy appear for the first time in the other two 2024 LEGO Disney sets. While Encanto has had a few sets, nearly half of these are miniature storybook models and don’t include standard mini-dolls.

This new LEGO Disney range is proving to be a great source of rare characters in LEGO form, even covering a never-before-seen movie for the theme in 43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes, though these are mini-dolls as opposed to minifigures.

Many Disney and Pixar movies have yet to receive physical minifigures in LEGO Disney sets, though the various LEGO Disney Collectible Minifigures series are helping to fill those gaps. Still, 43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes may be seen as an opportunity to debut LEGO Inside Out 2 minifigures, but it opts for mini-dolls instead.

The proportions of mini-dolls arguably fit the animated characters of Inside Out better than minifigures, though the same can be said for many Disney characters. The LEGO Disney design team most recently managed to capture the unique visages of the cast from Up for instance in 43217 ‘Up’ House.

For now, the LEGO Disney desk accessories range is setting itself apart from the rest of the theme for its uncommon or entirely exclusive characters, though whether it might extend to minifigures as well as mini-dolls in the future has yet to be seen.

43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes launches for £29.99 / $34.99 / €34.99 on May 1, 2024, with 394 pieces.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
