LEGO DOTS lives on in an upcoming LEGO Disney set

The style of LEGO DOTS was always intended to endure after the theme ended and you can see its legacy in an upcoming LEGO Disney set.

When the LEGO Group retired the LEGO DOTS theme, it promised that mosaic-based sets would continue across multiple themes. However, this stud-based style is pretty much reserved for LEGO Art sets, which were already using the technique before the retirement of LEGO DOTS. However, the legacy of LEGO DOTS is more clearly visible in a newly-revealed LEGO Disney set: 43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes.

When you think of LEGO DOTS, the main two characteristics are the dotted effect made by mosaic studs and the customisable, colourful style of the builds. 43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes manages to capture both of these aspects, with nine different mood faces made out of flat studs that can be switched out to display different emotions, in keeping with the theme of Inside Out and its upcoming sequel.

While Joy and Anxiety are the only mood plates displayed in the official images available, this snapshot of the cartoonish style of the plates echoes what we used to expect from LEGO DOTS sets. What’s more, the mood cubes have storage within, making them both practical and interactive for younger builders – once again something that LEGO DOTS achieved in its various pots and storage-focused builds.

It’s no surprise that the legacy of LEGO DOTS would become most clear in LEGO Disney, a theme that’s long since catered well for children. Fans of the now-retired theme can see that features from LEGO DOTS have indeed endured, as originally promised by the LEGO Group when announcing the theme’s retirement.
