LEGO Disney 43271 Lucky & Penny 101 Dalmatians Puppies review

Want a LEGO Dalmatian puppy in your life, but don’t want to fork out over £100? LEGO Disney 43271 Lucky & Penny 101 Dalmatians Puppies ticks that box.

Made up of just 268 pieces, 43271 Lucky & Penny 101 Dalmatians Puppies features two pocket-sized puppies with even tinier dots. Priced at £19.99 / $24.99 / €24.99, it’s a tribute to the classic Disney movie that costs a tenth of the price of its much larger cousin, 43269 101 Dalmatians. Does that price drop still result in a set worth picking up? Let’s take a look.

With less than 300 pieces, you aren’t expecting detailed display models when you pick up 43271 Lucky & Penny 101 Dalmatians Puppies. Nonetheless, when you take a step back, the end effect is still pretty cute.

Sure, there are some discrepancies that will pain anyone wanting to put them on display. The colour mismatch between the stickered spots and the white tiles is very obvious, and the choice to use sand coloured elements on the belly looks jarring, even if you can see what they’re trying to go for.

However, there are some genuinely clever building techniques, like the use of hinges for the feet that make for a stable stance, whether sitting or standing. The models are easy to split between two people, so ideal for taking on as a family, but if you choose to construct all of it yourself, the heads are built in two different ways, keeping things interesting.

The posing options are arguably better and more varied than 43269 101 Dalmatians, with movable legs, head, tail, and even ears. The smaller scale allows for a lot more options, complete with accessories to bring moments from the film to life.

Whether you’re after a playset to split between two younger builders who love the animated pups, or are looking for an homage to the classic movie that doesn’t break the bank, 43271 Lucky & Penny 101 Dalmatians Puppies does a whole lot with a limited budget and piece count. We were pleasantly surprised with the LEGO Disney set, packing in more bark than it needed to for its price point.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
