LEGO Education partner Raising Robots gifts boy the chance to build his own LEGO arm

A schoolboy in Portsmouth will be able to build his own prosthetic arm after being gifted a SPIKE Prime LEGO set.

Eight-year-old Albert McCormick was born with half of his left arm missing. Now, he might be able to build his own prosthetic arm out of LEGO, having been gifted a £360 SPIKE Prime LEGO set from LEGO Education Partner Raising Robots.

“It was a really fantastic opportunity for Albert,” Albert’s mum Emma McCormick told Portsmouth News. “It was such a surprise for him, and having that given to him was lovely.”

Albert first heard about the opportunity by hearing about David Aguilar, who also built a prosthetic arm out of LEGO bricks. The pair met while academy-accredited LEGO trainer Stephen Shaw was running a series of lessons at Albert’s school to educate teachers about how LEGO can influence learning.

Stephen saw how excited Albert was about the opportunity and organised gifting the SPIKE Prime LEGO set to the young boy.

“His little face lit up,” Stephen told the paper. “When he walked into the room and he saw me and then it was brilliant; he walked in further and saw his dad and had to do a double take because he didn’t know he was there.”

After Albert received the set, Stephen described how he went back to his class to show it to them, prompting applause from the rest of his classmates.

“It feels really good to have this and the book because ever since I saw that video, I really wanted to build my own robot arm,” said Albert.
