LEGO for Adults has grown to more than 130 sets

The LEGO Group ramps up its focus on the lucrative adult sector as the number of sets rated 18 plus approaches 140.

The desire to court the adult market is still strong at the LEGO Group headquarters. After drawing in a significant number of new builders over the lockdown period, the company wants – understandably – to hang on to that new and lucrative market. So after the recent rebrand to 18+ packaging and specific targeted events like LEGO Lates, its important to keep providing that market segment with new items to buy.

While the focus is, always has been, and always will be, on children, the LEGO Group is not neglecting their new found audience, and looking at the range of sets on the official LEGO website, there are now 137 sets that fall into the 18+ category. Some, admittedly, look like they’re there in error. 10692 Creative Bricks is a £12.99 set that allows you to build a sheep, a cow, a pencil and some other simple objects and seems like it would be more at home in the 6+ section.

But other than that, it’s all aimed directly at the person with both time and money on their hands. From Ideas sets like 21334 Jazz Quartet and 21336 The Office through Art sets. The three remaining ‘core’ Rolling Stones, Mick, Keith and Ronnie are 78, 77 and 74 respectively, which gives you an idea of how old the target audience for 31206 Rolling Stones might be.

And getting to the expensive end of things, there are 21 sets that break the ‘considered purchase’ barrier of £300. At this rarefied level, sets are dominated by film franchises – Star Wars, Harry Potter and Marvel, but there’s still room for some exotic Technic cars, Architecture and the recent, highly successful, dose of nostalgia that is 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle.

With Christmas on the horizon, it’s a safe bet that most LEGO purchased in the next month or so will be wrapped up with a child’s name on the label, but Billund are making sure that if there are any adults that have dropped a LEGO hint to their significant other, then there will be plenty to choose from.
