LEGO Friends 41725 Beach Buggy Fun review

LEGO Friends 41725 Beach Buggy Fun is a neat little introductory set to the summer wave of LEGO Friends sets.

With its bright colours, cute little animals, and diverse line-up of characters intent on living their best life, LEGO Friends is no less immune to 4+ sets than the rest of the LEGO roster of themes.

In the form of 41725 Beach Buggy Fun is an easy-to-build beach-themed introduction to the theme for the youngest builders, offering two mini-dolls and two animals for less than £10. A few interesting pieces included also help to offer good value to this set, even if the play value and building experience is heavily skewed towards younger hands.

Ultimately, LEGO Friends 41725 Beach Buggy Fun isn’t for anyone old enough to read this review. That being said, there’s plenty of LEGO value to be had within the box, particularly with consideration to the amount of LEGO you could get free with a £5 magazine, for instance. If you are after a little taste of what LEGO Friends has to offer and want to minimise your spending, it’s sets like these that should come to mind.

LEGO Friends 41734 Sea Rescue Boat review

LEGO Friends 41734 Sea Rescue Boat is a hefty mid-range set that takes the Friends characters out to sea colourfully and responsibly.

41734 Sea Rescue Boat is a great example of where we are at in play in 2023. What could have been a simple boat designed around the premise of a vacation, a fishing trip or even perhaps something competitive like racing is instead focused on the responsibility we have to look after our oceans. Plus a slide.

This is a set that packs in all the same bright, external colours and neat internal features you’d expect from a LEGO Friends set (including, of course, another toilet), all across some smart build techniques. It’s also a set that offers a different, more modern play opportunity, through framing the entire expedition out to sea as one that the included four characters have taken to better understand and clean up the litter from the oceans.

The play features all neatly fit into this set-up, in a way that keeps things interesting and highly playable, from the nets at the back of the vessel to the mini-sub that can dive underneath, and from the internal laboratory to the lovely bright yellow slide – the team can make a difference and still have fun with the included dolphins.

From a mid-range of LEGO Friends sets this summer 2023 that do verge on the more expensive in places, 41734 Sea Rescue Boat comes in at comparably good value for how much is worked into a sizeable final model.

LEGO Friends 41734 Sea Rescue Boat offers better value than a few of the other mid-range LEGO Friends sets releasing this summer, and a story and setting that is wholly unique and very modern. The best LEGO sets can surprise you in ways like this.

LEGO Friends 41736 Sea Rescue Center review

A vibrant LEGO Friends set bursting with smiley sea creatures, 41736 Sea Rescue Center is all about the animals.

41736 Sea Rescue Center could risk getting overlooked in the summer 2023 Friends range for how familiar it feels, at least compared to the sets that are genuinely making waves. But it still has things going for it, from the way it plays with form and function, raising the majority of its structure above sea level, to how – like almost all Friends sets – it manages to fill nearly every available space with details.

Plenty of those open the set up to some serious play for smaller hands, with scientific instruments offering credible builds for older fans (there are things to take from here to other models, for sure), but 41736 Sea Rescue Center doesn’t forget to have fun, either: just check out that slide back down to the water.

The real draw here, of course, is in the animals ready to be rescued, from a crab, sea turtle and seahorse to the two super-chill sea otters. It won’t be first on the list for many older fans (especially for its heavy use of the divisive vibrant yellow colour), but its large windows, undersea flora and menagerie of critters make it a fun parts pack.

A mid-range LEGO Friends summer 2023 set that perhaps doesn’t have a lot to immediately offer discerning adult fans, there’s plenty in 41736 Sea Rescue Center for both its primary target audience and those looking to bulk out their parts collections with interesting pieces.

LEGO Friends 41737 Beach Amusement Park review

One of the stand-out LEGO Friends sets this summer brings sea, sand, sun and surprises – including more functionality than many modern Technic models.

Theme: LEGO Friends Set name: 41737 Beach Amusement Park Release: June 1, 2023

Price: £89.99 / $119.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,348 Mini-dolls: 4

If you want the clearest example of how the LEGO Friends theme is shaking things up in 2023, look no further than 41737 Beach Amusement Park. This L-shaped beachfront build contains three separate functions – a spinning theme park ride, wave-surfing machine and carnival stall with moving targets – which are all controlled simultaneously by a single crank.

It’s all thanks to probably the most involved Technic building you’ll find in a Friends set, with axles connecting the three functions in one seamless mechanism in the model’s base. The effect is nothing short of hypnotic – but even still, 41737 Beach Amusement Park doesn’t prioritise function over form. Which is to say: it totally looks the part, too.

From the palm tree that takes advantage of this year’s new fern element to the drinks booth and turnstile entrance, everything here sells the concept of a cohesive and complete beachfront amusement park. The bulk of the Technic components are even cleverly hidden within a hollow ‘aquarium’ box, built with trans-blue panels stickered with fish, making for an attractive display setup from almost every angle.

If there are criticisms to be found, they’re first in the price (but what LEGO set isn’t that bit too expensive these days?), and second – perhaps more pressingly – in the woeful number of mini-dolls. Four is far too few to populate everything going on here, while at least one proper staffer for the park would have been appreciated.

The good news is that 41737 Beach Amusement Park works just as well (or perhaps even better) if you swap out the mini-dolls for minifigures, and requires zero other changes to fit neatly in any LEGO city layout. What more do you need from a LEGO Friends set?

Everyone will be talking about 41757 Botanical Garden this summer (and rightly so), but don’t miss out on 41737 Beach Amusement Park: it’s got buckets (and spades) of fun in the box, and arguably has the best vibes of any LEGO Friends summer 2023 set.

LEGO Friends 41744 Sports Center review

LEGO Friends 41744 Sports Center is as bright, colourful, healthy and innovative as any LEGO Friends set can be.

41744 Sports Center is the sort of LEGO Friends set releasing this June that most overtly ticks a lot of typical LEGO Friends boxes. It’s brightly coloured and gives off a lot of fun lifestyle vibes, the likes of which really do draw you in, at least from a play perspective, if not to inspire you to head down to the gym – doubt your local will have walls painted in these colours, mind.

As a LEGO set, it is utterly packed with sports and activities that not only lean into the creative opportunities sending four of the Friends characters to the sports centre can offer, but that pretty much puts any other LEGO theme to shame. You do not get anywhere near this number of internal details and things to put together and play with in any set from City, NINJAGO, Star Wars, or any other theme we can think of.

There is so much going on in 41744 Sports Center, both in the centre itself and on the one-on-one court outside, which although small in size has swappable play functions for at least three different outdoor sports.

Coupled with offering the first-ever diabetic character in LEGO form and you get the feeling that this is just LEGO Friends showing off now.

LEGO Friends 41744 Sports Center packs in way more than you would expect at this price, offering value and play far beyond what most other sets and certainly other themes can compete with. Playing through every sport and activity in this set will feel like its own little workout…

LEGO Friends 41745 Autumn’s Horse Stable review

As a theme, LEGO Friends loves its horses. And in the case of 41745 Autumn’s Horse Stable it’s for good reason, given the very pleasing-to-build locations and story elements that can be created in LEGO as a result.

In this case we have a fairly large stables to put together on the ground floor, and log-cabin-style living quarters upstairs, as well as two horses, a cart and a few other bits and pieces that all combined come together for a build that’s as relaxing to assemble as 21338 A-Frame Cabin.

41745 Autumn’s Horse Stable is also the sort of set to really highlight what Friends can specialise in as a theme. Alongside interesting LEGO building, bright colours and clear story, is so much more detail and so many more ways to tell the story within the set. No City, NINJAGO or Star Wars set receives as many props or side-builds to contribute to the story being told. This is Friends’ domain and sets like 41745 Autumn’s Horse Stable really highlight it.

LEGO Friends 41745 Autumn’s Horse Stable continues the love of horses as only this theme can, offering a really fun and unique setting for them to call home. Choosing to base it within a woodland setting adds a further level of detail and fun that plain roofs and walls would definitely have lacked.

LEGO Friends 41746 Horse Training review

LEGO Friends 41746 Horse Training packs a lot into a small box, offering better value than most 4+ sets in the process.

Two mini-dolls, two animals, a decent-sized training area, an infinite supply of bows and ribbons – LEGO Friends 41746 Horse Training packs a lot into a small box and offers it all at one of the more reasonable prices for this summer’s wave of releases.

Where prices do seem to jump in the mid-range Friends releases this summer, this lower-range set manages to offer a fair amount in the one box, even if it’s for the youngest LEGO builders out there with the 4+ age recommendation.

Even so, there’s a fair amount to put together and in a way that is credible to those who may want to pair this set with any of the other horse-themed Friends sets currently out there, such as 41745 Autumn’s Horse Stable.

It’s hard to really criticise entry-level LEGO sets such as LEGO Friends 41746 Horse Training, where their purpose is specifically to introduce new LEGO builders to some of the basics with the brick. That being said, there’s a lot more in this set than what a typical 4+ set usually offers, meaning that even if the LEGO experience isn’t specifically for you, there may be other ways to find value here.

LEGO Friends 41747 Heartlake City Community Kitchen review

LEGO Friends 41747 Heartlake City Community Kitchen offers enough to stand alone from the set with which it combines, but comes at a high price.

Designed almost first and foremost as a counterpart to this summer’s 41748 Heartlake City Community Center, 41747 Heartlake City Community Kitchen needs to work pretty hard to justify taking your money as a standalone set. Thankfully, it packs enough into its colourful design to deserve your attention – just maybe not at full price.

£62.99 feels very expensive for the size of 41747 Heartlake City Community Kitchen, and even for what it adds to 41748 Heartlake City Community Center, where it can become a new ground floor. This is half the price of its larger counterpart, but doesn’t feel like half the LEGO – even if its piece count comes pretty close.

Grumbles about pricing aside, 41747 Heartlake City Community Kitchen is a fun concept with enough attractive details to elevate it beyond typical Friends fare and into something beyond even LEGO City. The cohesive building with wraparound staircase, tiled street and rooftop terrace with smartly-designed fence form a solid core on which to build, and the trees with string lights, foliage and fun internal builds all keep your attention both during and after the build.

There’s a lot to love in 41747 Heartlake City Community Kitchen regardless of whether you plan to add 41748 Heartlake City Community Center, and that’s really as it should be for any combination sets like these. Perhaps not one to buy at full price, though.

LEGO Friends 41748 Heartlake City Community Center review

The flagship set of the LEGO Friends summer 2023 wave looks incredible, but is still very much a Friends set – for better and worse.

41748 Heartlake City Community Center is the kind of LEGO Friends set that could easily pull new fans into the theme, luring them away from the greys of Star Wars and the blacks (and very dark greys) of Batman with an explosion of colour. Toss in the modular building-esque approach, and you’re potentially looking at a set with much wider appeal than you’d expect from a Friends set. Potentially.

The reality is that this is still very much a LEGO Friends set, contained firmly within the theme’s aesthetic and design language. That’s not necessarily a bad thing: the four-storey-tall building is packed with inventive mini-builds, fun features and colourful construction. But besides a few clever architectural touches, you might not find much to genuinely elevate 41748 Heartlake City Community Center beyond the trappings of its theme.

That’s clearer nowhere more than in the new large L-shaped plates that form the base of each storey, which could easily have been constructed from regular plates, but for the sake of 41748 Heartlake City Community Center’s primary target audience are just moulded into one element here. And that means buying two copies of this set is not a shortcut to creating a fully-enclosed building, as it is with something like 41757 Botanical Garden.

If you’re prepared for a little more involved customisation or just want to insert something with a little more flair into your collection or layout, there are things to enjoy about 41748 Heartlake City Community Center, and those colours genuinely do pop in person. If nothing else, it’s a great parts pack, and those interior details – the likes of which you’d never see to this extent in a City set, from the gaming PC to the functioning sewing machine – will easily slot into any other custom builds you’ve got going.

41748 Heartlake City Community Center is exactly what you want to see from LEGO Friends, pushing boundaries of size, approach and aesthetics as the theme enjoys its first summer wave post-reboot. But while it really does have a lot to offer veteran fans of the series, it just doesn’t quite have the same wide appeal you might have hoped for from initial images.

LEGO Friends 41749 Newsroom Van review

LEGO Friends tackles hard-hitting journalism with an epic narrative in 41749 Newsroom Van, a set that is otherwise just fine.

Trucks, vans and the like feel 10 a penny across LEGO City and Friends, even if they do come in various shapes, forms and guises. 41749 Newsroom Van manages to stand out from the pack – if only briefly – for the story it gives its reporter Aliya, in which Peter tries to save an owl’s nest by preventing Darrel from chopping down a tree.

It’s relevant, topical and gives a chainsaw a surprisingly central role in a LEGO Friends set, but this daring narrative is really just there to embellish the core focus of the van, which – on its own – is just okay. That its sides can hinge open for interior access is smart, and there’s plenty of detail inside (stickered or otherwise), but the build is over in a flash and not particularly memorable.

41749 Newsroom Van doesn’t do anything particularly wrong, but it does feel like a hangover from the previous waves of Friends sets rather than a stand-out in the rebooted line-up. In short: this is one for younger Friends fans only. Back to you at the studio…

LEGO Friends 41752 Sea Rescue Plane review

If you like vibrant yellow, you’ll probably have a good time with 41752 Sea Rescue Plane, which would sit nicely within or beyond a LEGO Friends setting.

While some LEGO Friends sets have plenty to offer a wider audience, those never tend to be its vehicles, which are typically simplified, lean too heavily into the theme’s bright (and often lurid) colours or otherwise come across juniorised. Not so for 41752 Sea Rescue Plane, an affordable entry point into the LEGO Friends summer 2023 wave that delivers one of the best-looking vehicles in the entire range.

The plane is a small but mighty beast that takes advantage of all the sloped, curved and rounded elements in the current parts catalogue to deliver a chunky – but convincing – vehicle, which could easily be lifted from this range, its mini-dolls swapped out for minifigures and planted straight in a LEGO city.

It doesn’t forget its roots, though, most of which are communicated through its colour scheme. There are maybe one too many hues in the mix here, and the major culprit is the new(ish) vibrant yellow. It makes sense for a rescue plane, but it’s easier to strip out than the teal, so would get the chop from us.

The accompanying dolphin caught up in sea debris makes for a nice story starter, even if it’s still a shame the Friends range uses such stylised animals.

41752 Sea Rescue Plane likely won’t be top of anyone’s shopping list this summer, but if you’re looking for a LEGO Friends vehicle that finally transcends the theme’s usual limitations (for the most part), you won’t be disappointed with this.

LEGO Friends 41753 Pancake Shop review

While Star Wars continues to push the price tags of its pocket-money sets ever higher (hello, 75359 332nd Ahsoka’s Clone Trooper Battle Pack), 41753 Pancake Shop proves what the LEGO Group can still bring to the table in this price bracket. Two mini-dolls, a small food stall and a host of play-starter accessories make for either neat accessories for a wider Friends layout, or their own fun package for younger fans.

There are fun elements here even if you are only picking this up for the parts, from the printed pancake tiles to the kitchen-themed accessories, while the stand mixer is a genuine highlight of this entire wave. This set is also the cheapest way to add Paisley to your collection, who comes with one of the best Friends hairpieces available right now.

From its reveal a few weeks back to its sell-out launch at the start of June, LEGO Friends 41757 Botanical Garden has caught the eye of more than just the regular LEGO Friends crowd, and for good reason.

Aiming at a slightly older builder than most other LEGO Friends sets do, 41757 Botanical Garden explores a more mature subject matter with more mature LEGO building ideas and a more mature colour palette, offering up a final build that is as immersive, engaging and excellent as any of the best adult-focused LEGO sets across the rest of the LEGO Group’s product range in 2023.

Building this alongside the rest of the June 2023 LEGO Friends wave simply highlights how different it is and how much of a creative change of pace it is for a theme that until this point has primarily focused on younger builders, and drawn them in with all manner of subject matters bathed in bright, luminous, fluorescent and/or iridescent colour schemes.

This subject matter is very much up Friends’ street, offering a large greenhouse build with intricate trees and plantlife built inside and out, as well as a Koi pond. Instead of throwing that all into a bright pink, glowing yellow or aqua blue colour palette, though, 41757 Botanical Garden follows a more real-world presentation with more muted, natural colours that at once give life to the plants and trees included and credibly place the set into LEGO collections and displays from other themes.

LEGO Friends has taken a change of creative pace and direction with 41757 Botanical Garden and delivers something that may have LEGO Friends on the box, but that finally opens up this incredibly smart theme to a more mature, diverse audience of LEGO fans, including us.

LEGO Friends 41757 Botanical Garden is the best LEGO Friends set of the summer 2023 wave of releases, stands out as its own thing and – as evidenced by selling out on release day – will not only draw the curiosity and custom of a much larger LEGO audience, but deliver something wholly credible and worthwhile to them.

With the ever-expanding LEGO Friends map that is Heartlake City, 41759 Heartlake City Bus comes along right on schedule, combining an eye-catching design across a bus and bus stop with a spacious and inclusive interior.

The main feature to the set is its extending wheelchair ramp for the older passenger’s mobility scooter to use. It’s a simple and wholly manual play feature, but one that is not only central to part of the story that the set is telling, but that elevates the design and playability of the set too.

There’s plenty of space inside the bus for extra characters beyond the bus driver, older passenger and Paisley, in a design that very much is as the LEGO Group describes it – sized for young builders. From the side of the bus opening up to the roof being easily detachable, and the bright colours all over the model, this is clearly designed for the most hands-on of experiences.

LEGO Friends 41759 Heartlake City Bus may not be for older builders, but for those it is aimed at it offers a very playable, eye-catching and fun way to role-play and easily transport characters from house to house, stable to stable, botanical garden to sports centre, and so on.
