LEGO Ideas 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic GWP review

LEGO Ideas 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic is a small-scale treasure that proves set-specific gifts-with-purchase can still sparkle.

The LEGO Group’s recent gift-with-purchase track record has been a little uneven. For every fun and inventive set-specific tie-in, there’s been a head-scratcher (40771 TIE Fighter with Imperial Hangar Rack, we’re looking at you). But 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic – which is free with all orders of 21363 The Goonies from November 1, while stocks last – marks a real return to form.

It’s a genuinely desirable set that looks good, builds well, and feels like a meaningful companion to its full-sized sibling, 21363 The Goonies. This isn’t filler: it’s a pocket-sized slice of 1980s nostalgia and, most importantly for a GWP, one that you’ll actually want to display.

The box design sets the tone perfectly: a dark, cinematic sleeve wrapped in the same ship-wheel border motif as the main Ideas set, giving it that ‘collector’s edition’ feel rather than a GWP afterthought. Even before opening it, you can tell the LEGO designers have treated this one with care.

Inside are 179 pieces, and the build comes together fairly quickly, as you’d expect, but it’s a genuinely enjoyable little project. The angled floor and sloped rooflines create dynamic shaping, while the crammed attic interior is bursting with personality. Suits of armour, antique bottles, paintings, and even a minute figurine or two fill every nook and cranny.

It feels as chaotic and cluttered as it does in the film, and that’s precisely the point. Like the larger Goonies set, it’s the attention to detail that shines. There are a few stickers used for the background Easter eggs, but given that this is a GWP, that’s easily forgiven – and bonus points for looking excellent too.

Despite the small scale, there are still some clever techniques on display. The use of angled jumper plates to recreate the wonky drawers of an old piece of furniture is a brilliant touch; a tiny but effective bit of storytelling through design that shows just how much thought went into such a compact build.

And while the build may be small, it’s big on charm. The angled design gives it a cinematic perspective, more diorama than box build, and it looks great from almost every angle. Despite the low piece count, it’s surprisingly dense with every stud used to maximum effect.

And for fans with limited shelf space, this set offers the perfect solution: a little slice of The Goonies magic that doesn’t require moving half your collection to make room (although you will still need to buy the bigger set to get your hands on it anyway). It’s compact, distinctive, and a wonderful display piece on its own.

For all you cinephiles out there, 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic is crammed full of references to enjoy. There’s a ‘Lighthouse Diner’ poster, a newspaper clipping about Chester Copperpot, and of course the treasure map itself – the prop that kickstarts the entire Goonies adventure. These sit alongside a suit of armour, a skull ornament, and a stack of vintage curios that make the attic feel authentically lived-in.

The best part however has to be the framed pirate portrait that looks suspiciously like One-Eyed Willy – it’s missing a chunk over the woman’s mouth, which can be filled using Mouth’s reverse headpiece from the larger Ideas set, not only recreating a brilliant moment from the movie, but tying both sets together perfectly.

Then there’s the printed ‘The Goonies’ tile – an absolute gem of a piece that looks perfect front and centre here, but can also be attached to the larger set’s base as a display plaque. It’s a clever, dual-purpose design choice that once again gives synergy to the two Goonies sets. And honestly, there are more Easter eggs crammed into this tiny attic than most large-scale models manage. It’s proof that great design doesn’t depend on size, just creativity and care.

What really elevates The Walshes’ Attic are the two exclusive minifigures included: Mr and Mrs Walsh themselves. These new additions complete the family, joining Mikey and his older brother Brand from the main Ideas set. Both minifigures are spot-on recreations of their film counterparts, with Mrs Walsh in her cream scarf and cardigan and Mr Walsh in his green jacket and tie.

The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic is exactly what a great LEGO GWP should be: fun to build, rich in references, and desirable enough to make you want the qualifying set even more. The presentation is premium, the minifigures are genuinely collectible, and the design oozes love for the source material.

Recent GWPs may have wobbled, but this one proves the LEGO Group still knows how to get it right, serving up a brilliant little companion piece that captures the spirit of The Goonies in miniature. Detailed, characterful and surprisingly premium, it’s a GWP that reminds you how good these can be when the LEGO Group really cares. It’s not just a freebie; it’s a treasure in its own right.

I have more than 20 years in television production and photography and can finally put all that experience to good use by combining it with my number one passion in life, LEGO! I love all things brick-related, but the theme that really floats my boat is the original LEGO Pirates range. I currently have a LEGO wishlist that far outstretches my shelf space... and bank balance!

No, no me gusta que Lego obligue a comprar sus sets en lanzamiento. Y este gwp prácticamente exige a los fans de Los Goonies a comprarlo si quieren tener la losa impresa que DEBERÍA ir con el set principal. Gran reseña! Gracias!
