LEGO Harry Potter’s latest Polly Pocket-style set is left in limbo
LEGO Harry Potter 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom conceals hidden depths, but can it live up to previous Polly Pocket-style sets?
76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom has that same Polly Pocket feel we’ve seen in 76784 Black Dahlia Flower, 76781 Wednesday & Enid’s Dorm Room, and 76785 Thing’s Apartment, hinging open to reveal compact potions rooms for Snape and Hermione to work some brewing magic. Having already reviewed those Wednesday LEGO sets, hopes were high going into 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom…

Take a look at our review for 76785 Thing’s Apartment, or this ode to how cleverly LEGO Wednesday uses a simple hinge function, and you’ll see how expectations have been set for how this approach can take a model from good to great. Unfortunately, 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom ends up falling flat, despite having some potential.
The beauty of sets like 76785 Thing’s Apartment is that they function for both play and display. They straddle two worlds and do so with finesse. In 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom’s case, both play and display are a struggle.
To start with, the actual hinge is connected using two pins threaded through connectors, leaving the entire model feeling pretty fragile. Made up of 652 pieces, each side of the cauldron is fairly weighty – too weighty to spin on a couple of pins. It leaves gaps between the edges of the cauldron when closed and exposes instability when you open it up.

The end result is far from a polished cauldron model, although the dripping of the purple ‘potion’ inside is a neat effect. The printed Hogwarts crest element goes some way to holding the sides together, but not enough to smooth over all the gaps as you can see above. The stirring stick pops the cauldron in and out of place – an effect that would be more convincing if it actually clicked together more firmly.

Once opened up, there are some fun miniaturised versions of various magical ingredients and creatures on both Snape and Hermione’s respective sides of the classroom. However, the inside feels cramped rather than pocket-sized and it’s tricky to even slot a minifigure into place without accidentally knocking something off the table.
With LEGO Harry Potter often including sliding scenes that you can slot into place, you can’t help but wonder if tiny dioramas that you could slide in and out of the cauldron’s interior would have worked better. If 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom isn’t geared towards display, then it also doesn’t effectively function as a playset if interacting with the minifigures inside requires constant rebuilding.

Perhaps sets like 76785 Thing’s Apartment set the bar too high, and admittedly 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom comes in cheaper at £54.99 / $59.99 / €59.99. Still, that price drop seems to have resulted in a set that, instead of bringing the best parts of play and display, manages to skim over both for a model that doesn’t tick either box.
It’s hard to imagine who this is for. It doesn’t pack enough of a visual pop for older collectors to want to display it on a shelf, but there’s also limited functionality or interactivity to appeal to younger Harry Potter fans. 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom is left in limbo: a lot of potential, but a lack of execution to follow through on it.
Our honest opinion: 76464 Cauldron: Secret Potions Classroom doesn’t use the hinge function as smoothly as past LEGO sets, leaning more towards cramped than clever.
