LEGO Harry Potter is gearing up for a year of buildable creatures to rival Star Wars and Marvel

If rumours are to be believed, LEGO Harry Potter could be expanding its line-up of buildable creatures to rival that of Star Wars and Marvel.

Over the years, both LEGO Marvel and Star Wars have been slowly building up their repertoires of buildable creatures. From recreations of droids in Star Wars to meta venomised versions of Groot in Marvel, there are several types of brick-built characters and figures. Some are more successful than others but now the idea is expanding outside of those two themes.

LEGO Disney will introduce a buildable character with 43249 Stitch and, while LEGO Harry Potter has done buildable creatures before, the theme is welcoming still more throughout this year, if the latest rumours reported by Instagram user brick_clicker (via 1414falconfan) prove to be true. Up until now, LEGO Harry Potter’s brick-built creatures tend to lean towards a similar mechanical style, with the same basic structure used for 76394 Fawkes, Dumbledore’s Phoenix, 75979 Hedwig, and 76406 Hungarian Horntail Dragon.

That left little surprise in the way of building the models but last year saw LEGO Harry Potter expand its range of brick-built figures still further, with the release of 76414 Expecto Patronum and 76421 Dobby the House-Elf. Not being flying creatures, both sets required a brand-new design, capturing the aesthetic of both the blue Patronus and a compact version of fan-favourite Dobby well.

These display-focused builds work well in parallel with other LEGO Harry Potter sets that tend to be focused on recreating iconic scenes as playsets or expanding the minifigure scale versions of Hogwarts Castle and Diagon Alley. If you’re not keen to have a huge recreation of those Wizarding World locations, buildable creatures work well as standalone display models.

If that sounds up your street, then you’re in luck for the coming year. Instagram user brick_clicker (via 1414falconfan) reports that we can expect not one but two brick-built figures in rumoured sets 76427 Buckbeak and 76433 Buildable Mandrake. The name of the latter pulls an immediate connection to a LEGO Marvel rumour for 76296 Potted Groot (not to be confused with the already-revealed LEGO BrickHeadz 40671 Potted Groot).

Unlike the MCU’s Groot, however, Mandrakes are far from cute, resembling ugly, screaming babies. It’ll be interesting to see how the LEGO Harry Potter designers render them accurately in bricks, especially considering that Mandrakes in the Wizarding World need to stay under the earth, as their cry is deadly to humans. This could result in a creative mechanism where you can ease the Mandrake in an out of the soil, just like we see on screen.

For 76427 Buckbeak, the higher price when compared to 76394 Fawkes, Dumbledore’s Phoenix, 75979 Hedwig, and 76406 Hungarian Horntail Dragon suggests that the designers won’t be using the same formula for a winged creature again. In fact, it’s closer in price to 76414 Expecto Patronum, suggesting it’ll be a sturdier build leaning into Buckbeak’s horse-like frame.

All in all, there are a lot of creative possibilities for LEGO Harry Potter’s buildable creatures in 2024. With two released in 2023 and two more on their way this year, it seems that the LEGO Group’s inter-theme love of buildable creatures isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
