The LEGO history of Disney’s Mulan for 25th anniversary

Mulan is officially 25 years old today and we’re celebrating the occasion by diving into the film’s LEGO history, mini-dolls and its new minifigure.

Joining Batman Returns, today is the 25th anniversary of Disney’s Mulan, also timing with the 100th anniversary of the company. The original animated film from 1998 grossed $304 million worldwide and even inspired a live-action remake in 2020, which grossed considerably less at just $70 million worldwide.

Despite the live-action remake, the original animated movie remains a staple of Disney and Mulan has become part of the official Disney Princess roster, despite not being royalty.

From mini-doll to her first minifigure in 2023, the LEGO Group has a surprisingly in-depth history with Mulan that has brought us to the 25th anniversary of the movie and the centennial of Disney

Mulan first appeared in 2018 as part of 41151 Mulan’s Training Day, debuting the character as a mini-doll. This would be the only way she would appear for the foreseeable future.

2020 saw two sets for Mulan, 43182 Mulan’s Training Grounds and 43174 Mulan’s Storybook Adventures also featured alter ego Ping and Li Shang as micro-dolls. This has remained their only LEGO appearance to date. Both models also included Cri-Kee the cricket as a printed piece, filling out much of the cast in one year.

Two years later, Mulan returned yet again as a mini-doll in 43208 Jasmine and Mulan’s Adventure, which is still available at the time of writing. Cri-Kee is also included in this set.

Not only is 2023 an exciting time for LEGO Disney but it’s an especially notable time for Mulan’s LEGO representation.

2023 saw the debut of the first minifigure of the character with Cri-Kee the cricket as an accessory returning in 71038 Disney 100. However, this time Cri-Kee has a new design, facing the opposite direction with some sparkles to boot.

As well as the first Mulan minifigure, a fresh mini-doll is also included in the massive and monumental 43215 The Enchanted Treehouse – one of 13 mini-dolls. You can read our review of the huge Disney set by clicking here

Mulan’s LEGO history doesn’t quite date back 25 years, but it’s interesting to see just how much representation the character and the film have received over the past five years.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
