LEGO Icons 10331 Kingfisher Bird officially revealed

The LEGO Group has unveiled the next addition to its growing Fauna Collection in 10331 Kingfisher Bird, a detailed 18+ recreation of the blue and orange bird.

Coming in at £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 for 834 pieces, 10331 Kingfisher Bird feels like a natural next step from both the Botanical Collection (more LEGO nature) and 2015’s 21301 Birds (detailed brick-built birds). We’ve recently seen feathered friends in themes such as Creator 3-in-1 (31136 Exotic Parrot, 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot and so on), but this is easily one of the most intricate entries in the LEGO aviary so far.

Built out in blue and orange – mimicking the common kingfisher, which is found among Eurasia and North Africa – the bird captures the vibrant hues, long bill and short tail that define the kingfisher. It’s perched on a branch just above the water, ready to hunt, referencing the pose in which it’s typically shot by photographers. The splash of the waves takes advantage of a newly-transparent modified plate originally designed for 21060 Himeji Castle.

10331 Kingfisher Bird joins 31211 Macaw Parrots under the umbrella of the Fauna Collection, which sits alongside other subcategories like the Botanical Collection and the Modular Buildings Collection in the wider LEGO portfolio. Where most of those categories apply to sets from one theme, though, the Fauna Collection is already pollinating across multiple themes: in this case, LEGO Art and LEGO Icons.

The brick-built kingfisher could therefore be the first in a new series of brick-built birds, although the jury is out on that for the moment. For now, 10331 Kingfisher Bird will arrive on shelves on February 1 for £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99, with 834 pieces in the box.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
