LEGO Icons 10357 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C officially revealed

The latest LEGO Icons vehicle calls back to a bygone era of British/American sports cars with 10357 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, which is revving up for release next month.

Racing on to shelves on July 4 with early access for LEGO Insiders from July 1, 10357 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C arrives in dark blue with white racing stripes, mirroring the colour scheme of 2019’s 10265 Ford Mustang. The 1,241-piece set will retail for £139.99 in the UK, $159.99 in the US and €149.99 in Europe, placing it closest in part count and price to 10321 Corvette from the recent garage of LEGO Icons cars.

That’s serendipitous because this is another small and nimble US convertible, recreating Carroll Shelby’s iconic take on the AC Cobra. The racing driver began importing the British car – which was on the brink of being discontinued by AC Cars – into the US in 1962, combining its lightweight body with powerful American engines. The 427 represented the height of his ambition, with an aggressive seven-litre Ford engine under the hood.

That engine bay is present and correct in 10357 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, along with a healthy smattering of functions that include an opening bonnet, boot and doors and working steering. And despite the relatively trim piece count, the car manages to squeeze in a few brick-built accessories too, taking cues from the likes of 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 and 10298 Vespa 125.

This time round, those include a toolbox that can slot into the boot, a trophy that nods to its racing pedigree, a fire extinguisher that fits between the seats and a green $100 1×2 tile, referencing a renowned tale in the 427’s mythos. Legend has it that Shelby placed a $100 bill on the dashboard, and said anyone who could reach it while the car accelerated from 0 to 60mph could claim it. Such was the car’s sheer force that nobody did.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
