LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square ties into another classic theme

LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square has plenty of stories to tell – and one of those stories carries over into another classic theme.

The detail of 10332 Medieval Town Square means it’s full of opportunities for storytelling, something that sets it apart from other LEGO Castle sets that have come before. This is clear from an initial look at the LEGO Icons set but also backed up by insight from the LEGO designers who worked on the set. LEGO designer Henrik Rubin Saaby explained more of the detail behind one of the minifigures, tying her craft of painting shields into the history of LEGO Vikings.

“With the shield-maker, we wanted to have a tie-in to – it’s a bit of a stretch, but to the Vikings,” explained Henrik. “She’s a shield-maiden, and there’s also Thor’s hammer and a Viking shield in there. But then, what should her story be? So I made up that she was a shield-maker.”

For the shield in question, this is also a foray into new territory for the medieval LEGO world, capturing the imagery of the queen for the very first time.

“Then Ashwin [Visser, LEGO graphic designer] said, ‘We should do the queen’s shield.’” Henrik added. “We haven’t done a shield for the queen before.”

This crossover with LEGO Vikings carries through to the general style of the sets. While 21343 Viking Village is set in a different era to 10332 Medieval Town Square, as evidenced through the style of buildings and minifigures, there are some easy crossovers that mean both sets would look good displays side by side. Indeed, the shield maiden from 21343 Viking Village has the same hairstyle as the woodworker making chairs in 10332 Medieval Town Square.

You can buy 21343 Viking Village for £124.99 / $129.99 / €139.99 right now and 10332 Medieval Town Square for £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99 from March 1 for LEGO Insiders and March 4 for everyone else.
