LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square opts for adventure

LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square opts for adventure in its minifigures and model over conflict, perfect for a certain upcoming set.

The modern age of LEGO castle, which lives on through LEGO Icons, LEGO Ideas and gifts-with-purchase has not been quite as conflict-driven as the older theme. This isn’t necessarily bad, but a different approach to a familiar topic in the LEGO portfolio. 10332 Medieval Town Square may be the best example of this yet thanks to a future set.

Even compared to the older 10193 Medieval Market Village, the guards present in the retired LEGO Castle creation are double that of 10332 Medieval Town Square. While neither set is focused centrally on conflict or any kind of battle, 10332 Medieval Town Square is taking that one step further thanks to some of its minifigures.

Looking at the minifigure selection in 10193 Medieval Market Village, the characters consist of plain-clothed villagers other than the two guards which is ideal for a standard village. 10332 Medieval Town Square follows in its footsteps, mostly. While it too features plain-clothed townspeople, the crook and tax collector offer something more.

As well as being a member of the wolfpack, the crook’s attire is similar to that of a stereotypical rogue and it seems unlikely to be a coincidence that the tax collector is holding a lute and wearing comparatively flamboyant clothing in official imagery – similar to a bard. These just so happen to be classes in Dungeons & Dragons, which is getting a LEGO set for the 50th anniversary.

While official release details have yet to be confirmed, the 50th anniversary of the game is taking place now and there are rumours of a release for BoltBuild’s project-turned-set later this year. Provided that the LEGO Ideas set can’t cover all 12 main classes in its minifigures, the crook and tax collector could suffice as a Bard and Rogue to expand both models.

The build in 10332 Medieval Market Village expands on this point, including a tavern which is something of a rarity in the LEGO world. 10193 Medieval Market Village features a tavern too but the presence of such a building posits it even further as a potential companion to the LEGO Ideas Dungeons & Dragons set. The tavern in the original project isn’t huge either.

With a lack of conflict and some adventurous minifigures, 10332 Medieval Market Village is setting itself up as a good addition to the growing LEGO Icons and LEGO Ideas Castle range as well as an expansion model for the Dungeons & Dragons set.

The new set will be available for £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99 from March 1 for LEGO Insiders or March 4 widely. You can read our first impressions of the model by clicking here. While we wait for details on the LEGO Ideas Dungeons & Dragons set, 10332 Medieval Town Square is perfectly poised to expand on 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle.
