LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age visual tour and gallery

The latest upcoming LEGO Ideas set packs a big punch at a relatively small price tag. Check out its shining moments in our visual tour gallery.

LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age is based on a design by Jan Woznica during the LEGO Ideas ‘Out of This World’ challenge, bringing the style of 80s sci-fi posters to the world of outer space. In four colourful elements, it is a versatile display-focused set that lets the visuals speak for themselves.

The 688-piece, postcard-sized set features a linear story of a space shuttle, moon base, black hole, and a lunar eclipse, along with various different star constellations. At just $49.99 / £44.99/ € 49.99, this 18+ set is the cheapest LEGO Ideas set to be released over the last few years – and there’s still plenty of details to enjoy within it.

Due for release on May 5 for VIPs and May 8 for everyone else, here are some of our favourite highlights and elements from LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age, as well as a comparison to the original LEGO Ideas submission.

LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age build

Coming in four individual parts that work both independently and as a group, we’d expect the building process of LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age will be fairly repetitive. Where the four sections differ is in the colour and decoration on each brick-built postcard, with each boasting its own unique palette and focus. However, they all still keep that vintage sci-fi poster style, bringing a retro feel to the overall build.

LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age comparison

Comparing 21340 Tales of the Space Age, the first notable difference is that there’s an extra section, namely the fourth green image of what looks like a planet above a rocky landscape. Otherwise, the design has stayed incredibly faithful, all the way down to the use of coloured plates along the bottom and the angle of the rocket taking off. Each part of the design uses simple shapes to create vibrant and aesthetic parts of the overall build.

LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age display

Another unique element to LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age is that they can be displayed individually or as a group, as highlighted in the images below. What’s more, the base is sturdy enough for them to stand up on a shelf but there’s also a specially-designed LEGO element on the back which means you can display them all on the wall as well.

LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age details

Taking a leaf out of LEGO Art’s book, the elements of the postcards protrude from the background, creating a truly 3D effect even when seen from far away. The rocket ship, in particular, uses different levels of LEGO pieces to give the impression of clouds of smoke, while the eclipse also uses layered discs to present shadow-like elements.

LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age set will be available to buy from May 5 for LEGO VIPs and May 8 for all in both official LEGO Stores and online for $49.99 / £44.99/ € 49.99.
