Why LEGO Ideas 21338 A-Frame Cabin avoids the proposed focus

The LEGO designers behind 21338 A-Frame Cabin opted to avoid the hunting focus of the project, explaining why the set is about holidays instead.

As evidenced by the antlers above the door and the worn design, Andrea Lattanzio’s original proposal for 21338 A-Frame Cabin isn’t something that the LEGO designers behind the new set wanted to pursue, explaining why they chose to stray from the source material in a new interview with Tiago Catarino.

“Andrea’s original model went for a hunting-focused route embedded deeply into hunting culture and we know that doesn’t gel with everybody, so we decided to go for this more modern, aspirational approach,” explained Ollie Gregory.

That modern and aspirational approach is a holiday home rather than a hunting cabin and with an overall less ramshackle design. Early promotion of the set emphasised the holiday home feel.

“We’ve been, like most of the world, trapped for two and a half to three years so that idea of escapism and a digital detox brought at least myself to the project,” commented Justin Ramsden. “That was more from us wanting a getaway rather than going to a post-apocalyptic wasteland hunter’s cabin which could appeal to some but not to a few of us.”

While the original project’s description doesn’t mention hunting, it does recognise the worn nature of the building, having been refurbished by the minifigures to live in. However, certain aspects of the build could be considered as linked to hunting culture, including the horns above the door that resemble antlers and weaponry scattered throughout the submission.

The official design eschews these in favour of a fixed and complete design, a cosy interior and a focus on forest animals including an otter, butterfly, squirrel and bird.
