LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite: comparing the fan concept to the finished set

With LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite arriving next month, how closely does the finished set match up with the original fan concept?

K-pop phenomenon BTS will soon be immortalised in LEGO form, with an upcoming set based on one of the band’s most popular music videos. 21339 BTS Dynamite has been revealed by the LEGO Group to be launching sometime in early March 2023, with the 749-piece build featuring all seven members of the world-famous pop group as minifigures on the video set of their global smash-hit single, ‘Dynamite.’

The finished model is the brainchild of fan designers JBBrickFanatic and BangtanBricks, in reality friends Josh and Jacob from Indiana and New York, USA, with their LEGO Ideas submission having reached 10K supporters back in May 2021. The original creation is reported to have ‘combined their love of BTS and their passion for LEGO building’ to deliver a winning model, one that obviously suitably impressed the LEGO Ideas review team. With the final look of 21339 BTS Dynamite now revealed, how closely does the finished model mirror the fan concept?

Both versions include three separate buildings, a donut shop, disco façade and record store, all of which can be detached and displayed in multiple ways. The scale of 21339 BTS Dynamite may have been tweaked slightly from JBBrickFanatic and BangtanBricks’ initial version, but the basic layout of the model remains roughly the same.

However, where 21339 BTS Dynamite really shines compared to the LEGO Ideas submission is the level of additional detail present throughout the build. From store signs and interiors featuring the band’s albums to a graffiti backdrop mini basketball court and full stage for performances at the rear of the disco, the set is packed with plenty of visual appeal.

As well as the buildings themselves, 21339 BTS Dynamite also includes a brick-built version of the ice cream truck that’s featured in the original music video, complete with melting cone on the roof and ‘Dynamite’ logo on the side.

The seven BTS member minifigures featured in the set receive a boost in detail too, with the original blank-faced versions now replaced with more accurate likenesses of RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook. The minifigures of the South Korean pop icons also manage to reflect the look of the band’s clothing and hairstyles in at least one scene from the music video, allowing fans to recreate the moment themselves if they so wish. In addition, both sides of each superstar’s face has a different printed expression for even more display options.

LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite will launch in early March 2023 and be priced at £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99.
