LEGO Ideas 21361 Gizmo has some stark differences compared to the pitched model, and the designer has explained the many changes made.
Senior Model Designer Chris McVeigh has opened up regarding the new LEGO Ideas Gremlins set on the official online store, detailing their process in creating such a life-like figure, while explaining what changes were made to the fan design and why.
“I have a process for transforming creatures into LEGO bricks, which I first used on the LEGO Ideas Tuxedo Cat,” explains Chris.

“I start by collecting a lot of reference images and carefully choose the scale of the model. I then build a rough wireframe and start to fill in the contours. As the model takes shape, I work out how it will be poseable: head, arms, hands, etc. The final step is finessing and figuring out tiny details that will improve accuracy and make the model special.”

“We had a collaborative process,” continues Chris, detailing the collaboration with fan designer Fuma Terai, also known as terauma. “We always invite the fan designer on our journey as we transform their submission into a real product. Fuma was very supportive of the direction we took the model.
“We’ve scaled the model up slightly to allow for additional detailing,” notes Chris. “In addition, the model has a two-in-one feature, allowing you to build Gizmo either standing or sitting, and we've also included a set of brick-built 3D glasses to firmly anchor it in the 1980s.”
The increased size has come with an upgraded level of detail, allowing 21361 Gizmo to be much more accurate to the on-screen Mogwai. You can see how else the models compare by clicking here. Chris rounds out the facts for 21361 Gizmo by explaining an Easter egg that has yet to be spotted in official imagery.
“We have included a single transparent element at the heart of the model as a tribute to the fan designer’s daughter, who loves transparent LEGO bricks,” says Chris. “We’ve also put a very specific colour trim inside the model. Fans of the movie will know what it means!”
This is the latest fan designer reference in a LEGO Ideas set, joining the long list of personal tributes hidden in licensed and original models alike. LEGO Ideas 21361 Gizmo will retail for £89.99 / $109.99 / €99.99 when it launches on October 1. Pre-orders are open now.
