New LEGO Ideas contest prize is out of this world

The LEGO Ideas team is hopping aboard the space train for its latest contest, which will see two winning entries turned into future LEGO Insiders rewards.

2024 is officially-or-unofficially the year of LEGO Space, with at least 10 different themes contributing to the concept (three of which have yet to debut their products). The LEGO Ideas team may not have anything on the subject up its sleeve – the current slate includes giant sharks, cute cats and a cosy bookshelf, but no spaceships – but the team is still getting in on the action with a brand new contest.

Titled ‘Exploring the Cosmos’, the challenge tasks builders with designing space exploration vehicles and planetary bases using between 150 and 250 pieces. The team will whittle down all the submissions to a list of up to 30 finalists (split evenly between vehicles and bases), which will then be placed into a fan vote. One entry from each category will become a future LEGO Ideas Insiders reward, available to purchase with Insiders points in the Insiders Rewards Centre.

The two grand prize winners will each receive 10 copies of their finished set – just like regular LEGO Ideas fan designers – and five space-themed LEGO sets (10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery, 21340 Tales of the Space Age, 31152 Astronaut, 42158 NASA Mars Rover Perseverance and 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover). Four runners-up will take home 21340 Tales of the Space Age and 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover.

References to intellectual properties (such as Star Wars or Star Trek) are not allowed, while judges will be selecting finalists based on criteria including best use of LEGO elements, most inspired details and relevance to the contest’s theme. Entries close on February 21, 2024 at 11am GMT. The fan vote will run from February 28 to March 6, 2024.

Head over to LEGO Ideas to check out the full terms and conditions and submit your entry. Good luck!

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
