The fan designer behind the original LEGO La Catrina submission has shared a side-by-side comparison between their original design and the official set arriving on shelves.
Yop1172 submitted their La Catrina idea on August 17, 2023. When the redesigned LEGO Ideas 21372 La Catrina releases on August 1, nearly three years later, it will be available for £109.99 / $139.99 / €119.99.
However, as we’ve already discussed, the final set looks dramatically different from the original submission. A different coloured dress and a redesigned skull are among the smaller changes, but the most noticeable difference is the size.
The original build stood at a staggering 86cm tall and used 2,894 pieces. The final model is less than half that height at 43cm tall and contains just 1,212 pieces. The reduced size not only helps lower the price, but also makes the set much easier to display.

On Instagram, yop1172 shared a side-by-side comparison video showcasing the differences between the original design and the finished set.
Alongside the comparison, yop1172 praised the LEGO Group’s design team for helping adapt the project into an official set.
“Many thanks to the team behind the adaptation: Jim, Melody, and Jordan,” they wrote. “It was a true pleasure to be part of the process and see the project brought to life. Thanks to God, to my family, and to everyone who voted – I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!”
One of the LEGO designers who helped bring the set to life, Jim Clayton, replied: “It was such a pleasure to work with you and thanks for the amazing submission! Glad to see it’s finally out there.”
If you want to get your hands on the final model, LEGO Ideas 21372 La Catrina releases on August 1 for £109.99 / $139.99 / €119.99 and is available to pre-order from LEGO.com now.
