LEGO Ideas is increasing the maximum piece count for projects

The LEGO Group is increasing the maximum piece count for LEGO Ideas projects by 66%, opening up the potential for bigger and more expensive sets.

The current threshold for LEGO Ideas projects is a maximum of 3,000 pieces, but Brickset reports that the platform will ‘soon’ increase that number to 5,000. The doors will therefore be open to bigger and more detailed product pitches, though whether such sets actually make it to shelves of course still depends on them racking up 10,000 votes and getting the green light from the Ideas review board.

Plenty of LEGO Ideas projects brush up against or even hit the current limit of 3,000 pieces, so there are clearly builders out there who would like to go bigger if they had the chance. And LEGO Ideas as a theme has already pushed past the 3,000-piece mark with four different sets, as designers modify successful models to meet standard LEGO product criteria (such as stability, build flow and so on).

Those include 21330 Home Alone at 3,955 pieces, 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale at 3,745 pieces, 21323 Grand Piano at 3,662 pieces and 21318 Tree House at 3,036 pieces. Changing the maximum piece count for projects to 5,000 could one day see the theme blow past Home Alone – but we’re a good way off from that yet given the change hasn’t even been implemented yet.

Once it has, designers will need to submit projects, take them to 10,000 votes, get the green light from the LEGO Group and then wait for them to hit shelves, so we’re probably looking at 2026 or 2027 at the earliest for the first 5,000-piece LEGO Ideas set.

The latest LEGO Ideas sets to hit shelves include 21350 Jaws and 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas, while 21352 Magic of Disney launches October 1.
