The LEGO Group’s Le Mans Peugeot building challenge is finished

The LEGO Group’s collaborative building challenge with Peugeot to mark the centenary of Le Mans has finished, revealing a complex, massive car.

Based on both 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar and the real vehicle, the 626,392-piece model is finally completed after the project started earlier this weekend

A team of 12 builders assembled the model through the night and finished the build in under 24 hours. It uses 623 different types of LEGO Technic elements, weighs over 900kg and measures 520cm long, 220 cm wide and 136cm high.

“Our designers are always ready for the next challenge, but building this iconic model for real certainly pushed their building expertise to the limit,” said Joanna Katharina Lazar, Vice President of Global Product and Marketing Development at the LEGO Group.

“Watching their creativity as they tackled the pioneering build live at Le Mans next to the real model, and hearing the crowd cheering them on was truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The challenge shows that with LEGO Technic and some imagination, you can build anything for real.”

This project was made possible thanks to the development of a new concept for ‘hyper elements’, big versions of LEGO Technic bricks made of standard elements, then put together. This is the first time the concept has been used, but it seems unlikely to be the last.

“We have been working closely with LEGO Technic on the Peugeot 9X8 and are so happy that it is now available for fans across the world to buy,” shared Linda Jackson, CEO of Peugeot. “This weekend, here at Le Mans, are seeing the LEGO Technic Peugeot 9X8 come to life in the size of our race car! What a great idea to challenge the team to do it within 24 hours and it was exciting to see the team rise to the challenge.”

42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar is available now for £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 and you can read our review to find out more.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
