LEGO’s license for Keith Haring means more than just an Art set
The LEGO Group’s license for the recently revealed LEGO Art 31216 Keith Haring Dancing Figures is one part of an ongoing mission from the late artist.
31216 Keith Haring Dancing Figures captures one of the pop artist’s most famous works, one you might have seen in various forms over the years. The dancing figures have been translated into merchandise for a variety of different brands, including UNIQLO, Lacoste, Coach, Adidas, and now the LEGO Group – to name but a few.
Haring himself passed away at the age of just 31 in 1990, as the result of AIDS-related complications. A year after his diagnosis, he formed the Keith Haring Foundation and charged them with not only managing his legacy but raising money and awareness for ‘not-for-profit organisations that assist children, as well as organisations involved in education, prevention, and care related to AIDS’.
“In accordance with Haring’s wishes, the Foundation concentrates its giving in two areas: the support of organisations which enrich the lives of underprivileged children and the support of organisations which engage in education, prevention, and care with respect to AIDS and HIV infection,” reads a statement from the Foundation.
Licenses for use of Haring’s work fund the vital work that the Keith Haring Foundation does, meaning that 31216 Keith Haring Dancing Figures will be part of that ongoing fundraising.
LEGO Art 31216 Keith Haring Dancing Figures will retail for £104.99 in the UK, $119.99 in the US, and €119.99 in Europe upon its release on May 15.
