Available from June 1 through to June 3 for LEGO Insiders and from June 4 to June 7 for the general public, while stocks last, LEGO 40693 The Lord of the Rings: Fell Beast is being awarded exclusively with purchases of LEGO 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr in LEGO stores and at LEGO.com.

There is no other way to pick up this 269-piece gift-with-purchase which is sure to frustrate those of us working on a smaller LEGO budget than the £399.99 / $459.99 / €459.99 required to purchase the impressive (as outlined in our in-depth review) 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr.

But, for those able to consider such a spend on 10333 at point of launch, then 40693 The Lord of the Rings: Fell Beast is a mighty gift-with-purchase to get you over the line. It’s a sizeable reconstruction of the terrifying creatures that fly around seeking out Frodo and the One Ring, even if it still sits at probably 50% scale to what we saw in the movie trilogy. The reduced scale doesn’t diminish the Fell Beast’s creepy features spread across that long body, whilst the wide wingspan is aided by the plastic wings you pop into place.

The small build of castle wall to represent the ruined city of Osgiliath serves excellently as a stand for the winged beast, as well as offering a different shade of grey to help with overall display. The one issue is perhaps that the wings can’t be angled forward or back, locked into an up-and-down range of motion, most likely for requiring stronger hinges to support the weight of the wings.

As a compromise then it’s not the worst thing, allowing the GWP to be that much bigger. As a complement to 10333 Barad-dûr, 40693 The Lord of the Rings: Fell Beast serves as the perfect treat, and an excellent reason for those lucky enough to purchase 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr on day one to do just that.
