LEGO Mario Kart model offers second chance for retiring set

LEGO Super Mario is expanding into LEGO Mario Kart in 2025, and one set is offering a chance for a retiring model and figure.

We’ve been given a first look at LEGO Mario Kart at Gamescom, consisting of six sets coming to shelves on January 1, 2025. The builds are filled with a notably varied cast of characters from across the franchise, including Baby Mario, Peach and Luigi, as well as familiar faces from Donkey Kong to Lemmy.

Donkey Kong is only currently available in one LEGO Super Mario set – 71424 Donkey Kong’s Tree House – scheduled to retire at the end of 2024 at the time of writing. Every other build in the LEGO Donkey Kong range retired at the end of July.

Thankfully, we now know that you won’t need to pick up 71424 Donkey Kong’s Tree House unless you want Cranky Kong. LEGO Mario Kart is offering a second chance for the Donkey Kong figure, but without the action tag that allows an interactive figure to ride him.

There are still many LEGO Super Mario sets retiring at the end of 2024 with characters from across the Mario Kart series. This includes 71429 Nabbit at Toad’s Shop with Nabbit, Larry and Morton in 71427 Larry’s and Morton’s Airships and 71423 Dry Bowser Castle Battle’s titular character.

At least you don’t have to worry about Donkey Kong though. He is included in 72033 Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo. Here are the other LEGO Mario Kart sets coming in January 2025.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
