LEGO Marvel 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure review

A bulked-up 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure offers up a variant of the iconic LEGO Marvel character, but one that’s not without issues.

The LEGO Group’s Marvel and DC construction figures occupy a strange place within the company’s product portfolio. They’re just slightly too toyetic to be standalone display pieces, but not sturdy enough to be truly playable action figures.

In fact, if anything, they more closely skew towards classic BIONICLE sets of yesteryear. However, while the blocky form of those fan-favourite characters was well-suited to their mechanical nature, translating the human shapes of superheroes into workable LEGO forms is proving to be a little hit and miss.

A case in point is 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure, the latest addition to the LEGO Marvel subtheme and one that is effectively part of a duo alongside 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure. Both sets are based on the characters’ appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and released on the same day, yet offer two decidedly different building experiences.

76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure launched on April 1, 2024 and is available to buy now from LEGO.com, LEGO Stores and third-party retailers.

— LEGO Marvel 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure build —

Let’s face it, LEGO construction figures are like BrickHeadz – you either love ‘em or loathe ‘em. Primarily aimed at a younger target audience, the basic design of the sets means they’re really meant to be played with, despite their inherent nature of being brick-built characters.

Swinging into view for April is 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure, wearing the high-tech armour created for him by Tony Stark and as worn in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The figure includes a number of printed and pearl gold pieces, as well as four mechanical arms attached to the character’s back. Spidey’s printed face element receives an impressive upgrade too, with metallic accents on the eyes adding some real dimensionality to the hero’s mask.

As with other LEGO construction figures, 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure is easily assembled, starting with the torso, legs, arms and then head, with ball and socket joints satisfyingly snapping into place. The completed model is fully jointed and can be displayed in a number of different ways to mimic its on-screen counterpart, allowing fans to recreate Spidey’s many dynamic poses. There’s minimal wobble from the finished build when moving any part of it and the character can be stood solidly in place once you’ve tweaked and moved it.

While at first glance everything may well be in order, there are a number of issues regarding 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure that soon become a little too obvious. For starters, as with other LEGO construction figures, the character’s shoulder armour pieces should really be attached to its arms, as moving the appendages leaves the dark blue elements sticking up in an odd position.

Likewise, the chunky digits of 76226 Spider-Man Figure have been replaced here with claw-like fingers (only four of each too), an odd design choice for the character for sure. It’s also hard not to bemoan the lack of any flexibility in Spidey’s toes, with flat feet offering stability, but limiting some potential display poses.

There are also some exposed areas, such as the character’s back and ball and socket hip joints, that have clearly been left that way for maximum flexibility, but give 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure an unfinished look. Frustratingly, there are no webbing accessories included with the build, such as those that came with the likes of 76225 Miles Morales Figure and 76226 Spider-Man Figure.

The four mechanical arms do add a nice extra touch, but selling them as being ‘fully articulated’ is a bit of a stretch. While they can certainly be placed in a few positions to match the armour’s big-screen functionality, you may find yourself removing this section of the model altogether, especially during extended play sessions.

There are no minifigures included with 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure, essentially mirroring other similar LEGO construction figure sets. While the inclusion of an exclusive minifigure might have given fans more of a reason to pick up the model, that extra piece count would undoubtedly have pushed up the price of the build slightly.

— LEGO Marvel 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure price —

76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure isn’t exactly a pocket-money purchase, but should still be affordable enough for its target audience. For £29.99 / $29.99 / €34.99 you’re getting a 303-piece build, which is more elements than are included with the similarly-priced 76226 Spider-Man Figure.

The price point also gets you a number of new printed pieces such as Spidey’s mask, chest and torso, as well as a selection of pearl gold elements, many of which have already popped up in existing NINJAGO sets.

— LEGO Marvel 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure pros and cons —

If you’re fan of Spider-Man: No Way Home or are looking for a companion set to 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure, then this LEGO Marvel model is a no-brainer. On the flipside, this is yet another construction figure that suffers from the same issues as other similar builds and it’s understandable why it may not appeal to all.

New printed pieces and four mechanical arms do offer some variety from 76226 Spider-Man Figure though, making 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure a viable alternative purchase. However, the LEGO Marvel set won’t be for everyone and picking up the model will ultimately come down to whether or not you’re a fan of this type of buildable character.
