LEGO Marvel mechs could take inspiration from What If…? episode

What If…? Season 3 is now streaming on Disney+ and the LEGO Marvel design team would do well to take inspiration for future mechs from an episode of the show.

The third and final season of What If…? premiered on December 22, with the animated Marvel Studios show now streaming on Disney+. The anthology series has presented fresh takes on the MCU and even spawned multiple LEGO sets such as 76194 Tony Stark’s Sakaarian Iron Man and 76201 Captain Carter & The Hydra Stomper, plus numerous minifigures in 71031 Marvel Studios.

New instalments of What If…? Season 3 are currently dropping daily on Disney+, allowing fans to binge-watch the show over the Christmas period. The good news for the LEGO Marvel design team is that the first episode of the latest season could provide plenty of inspiration for future sets and even allow an existing subtheme to expand. *Spoilers ahead*

‘What If… the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers’ features Bruce Banner’s rage monster battling giant-sized versions of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, with the team piloting massive mechanical suits. The episode culminates in The Avengers linking up their mechs to create an even bigger machine, one that can go toe-to-toe with a gamma-fueled nightmare.

The LEGO Marvel theme has already released plenty of mech sets over the years, with 76307 Iron Man Mech vs. Ultron and 76308 Spider-Man vs. Anti-Venom due to launch on January 1, 2025. While those models might appeal to younger builders, some have been decidedly odd choices and left us scratching our heads as to why certain characters would even need such an armoured suit.

However, ‘What If… the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers’ could well provide a springboard for the LEGO Marvel subtheme to take a leaf out of the NINJAGO and Monkie Kid playbooks, by combining multiple mechs into one huge build.

The two themes already have a great track record for releasing massive mech models and the What If…? episode might be just the inspiration the LEGO Marvel design team has been looking for to take their mech-building experience to the next level.

Unleashing a series of sets that can be purchased individually and then attached together to create something even more impressive would therefore seem like a logical next step for the LEGO Marvel subtheme to pursue.

It also wouldn’t be the first time that the LEGO Marvel theme has released a model and then launched an add-on build further down the line. For instance, a precedent may have been set with the arrival of 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle, which was followed months later by 76280 Spider-Man vs. Sandman: Final Battle to complete one cohesive scene.
