LEGO Marvel X-Mansion joins a limited list of specific sets
LEGO Marvel 76294 X-Men: The X-Mansion is the latest set to embrace a meme but it’s not even the first Marvel building to receive this treatment.
Of the dozens of references in 76294 X-Men: The X-Mansion, one has caused quite a stir online since its reveal as Wolverine’s bed features the portrait of Scott and Jean that he holds in a popular meme from the X-Men animated series. Even the official box art for the build makes clear the designer’s intentions in this room and we’re sure that the community will be replacing this stickered tile for other iterations of the theme when the set launches early next month.
It’s not the first LEGO set to include a popular meme though, and it’s not even the first LEGO Marvel modular building to do so.
While 76269 Avengers Tower and 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum are filled with Easter eggs of scenes that have become popular on the internet, it’s 76178 Daily Bugle that is most similar to 76294 X-Men: The X-Mansion for an entire room dedicated to a Marvel meme. In the skyscraper building, Peter Parker sits behind a desk with a portrait of Spider-Man in the background. Replace Parker with Spider-Man and you’ve got another LEGO meme recreation in the modular Marvel street.
Beyond the superhero theme, the LEGO designer’s knowledge of internet culture knows no bounds. As well as the Lofi Girl sticker (which then became an official collaboration) in 80022 Spider Queen’s Arachnoid Base, other memes spotted in LEGO sets include Darth Jar Jar in 75389 The Dark Falcon, a The Lord of the Rings meme in 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell and even the debut of a Morbius minifigure after the character’s legacy on social media.
76294 X-Men: The X-Mansion isn’t the first LEGO set with a meme reference by any margin, but it’s still good to see that the LEGO designers know of online culture. It will be interesting to see exactly what the community does with the latest LEGO Marvel meme and the rest of 76294 X-Men: The X-Mansion when it releases next week.
