LEGO Moana 2 trailer highlights missing part of Disney sets
The LEGO Group’s latest trailer recreation is building on the success of a viral video while highlighting what’s missing from the Moana 2 sets.
Hot on the heels of the LEGO Wicked trailer recreation, Walt Disney Animation Studios has revealed a new official LEGO trailer remake for Moana 2, and there’s something odd surrounding a specific character featured in the sequel. Moana 2 starts to be released in cinemas worldwide later this week from November 27 while its corresponding LEGO sets will not arrive until next year.
The LEGO trailer is impressively animated and is based on footage from various trailers and TV spots mixed together in the distinct stop-motion style that LEGO minifigures and mini-dolls alike lend themselves well to. It’s not just mini-dolls and micro-dolls in this trailer though as a certain bigfig makes a surprise appearance

Maui’s long-retired bigfig from 2017’s 41150 Moana’s Ocean Voyage has been brought back for the new LEGO trailer despite any version of the character being missing ever since, including in the official LEGO Moana 2 sets. In the trailer, they also appear in their half-shark form which has been edited using existing elements in odd shapes and sizes.

As odd as Maui’s inclusion is considering the lack of the character in the LEGO portfolio since 2018, not featuring Maui in the trailer recreation at all would been more confusing. The LEGO Moana 2 trailer’s release right before the release of the sequel was inevitable considering a viral video from 2017.
The LEGO Group’s recreation of the first Moana film has earned 115 million views over the past seven years and it’s not surprising to see the franchise return as a stop-motion LEGO video in this context. It is surprising though to see that the same Maui bigfig is used in both despite them being released seven years apart.
Moana 2 will be available to watch later this week and the sequel’s LEGO sets will be released on January 1, 2025. A third is rumoured but it seems unlikely to fill in the Maui-shaped gap in the current LEGO portfolio. Click here to see what’s rumoured and confirmed for LEGO Disney and beyond in 2025.
