LEGO Monkie Kid is one year older than you would think
Both 80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary and a GWP confirm that LEGO Monkie Kid’s anniversary is in 2024, but to some, it’s only four years old.
The box art and name of 80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary confirm that LEGO Monkie Kid is celebrating its 5th anniversary next year and a new gift-with-purchase has solidified that point with a new Monkey King minifigure.
The theme’s start in 2020 suggests that in 2024, it will only be four years old. However, that’s only true in part of the world.
When you are born in China, you count as one year old. Considering the deep connection ELGO Monkie Kid has to Chinese legends, it only makes sense that the theme is counted as one year older too, especially as it was likely in development for more than a year. This is likely the real explanation behind the theme’s fifth anniversary in 2024.
However, there’s another potential reason for the theme to celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2024 that may make more sense for those outside of China. In 2019, 71025 Series 19 launched with a piece and minifigure that would kickstart LEGO Monkie Kid – the original Monkey King.
The theme’s origins can be traced back to this minifigure the year before it debuted and – as well as the nominal age system in China – is a sufficient explanation behind the theme. To some, it’s educational too and showcases another way that LEGO Monkie Kid has familiarised worldwide fans with Chinese culture.
80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary is releasing on January 1, 2024, for £159.99 / $189.99 / €179.99 and combines with two other massive LEGO Monkie Kid models. The availability details of the fifth anniversary GWP have yet to be officially confirmed

I was confused about this when I first saw that box art, but I figured that it meant “5 years of Monkie Kid” instead, since it will be 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 that make up the 5 years. This makes more sense though, thanks for the info!
