LEGO NINJAGO 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer review

71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer is easily the most accommodating LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising set, but that comes at a price.

LEGO NINJAGO has been releasing sets for over a decade so it’s safe to say that enthusiasts will have at least one minifigure of the main ninja. However, since Dragons Rising includes three new characters, it’s an exciting opportunity for those that have been with the theme for a while.

Thankfully, 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer welcomes longtime enthusiasts with all three new characters and a bonus Imperium minifigure in one notably fun set.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer build —

71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer is designed in Sora’s colour scheme and it is a sight to behold. It’s vibrant, sleek and blends right in with the rest of NINJAGO, despite being based on an entirely new character.

There’s only room for one minifigure, but it’s not called Sora and Arin’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer, so… that’s not really an issue. And as the name promises, it can transform from a bike to a mech (and back again), with plenty of movement in either form for a variety of dynamic and creative poses.

The transformation is simple, intuitive and has plenty of options for posing midway through. There’s a lot of movement in the mech, but looking at the build in the series, it’s a bit too thin to be completely accurate. However, this thinner frame fits the bike format better than if it was more accurate and an extra four or six pieces wide.

Picking a favourite between bike and mech is no easy task, which only speaks to how well this set manages to achieve both its forms. Admittedly the tyres on the knees are a bit obvious in mech form, but the price might have been higher if they were able to be hidden.

Unfortunately, the flying Imperium vehicle isn’t impressive in the slightest with a boring build, but it’s at least more exciting than the side-build in 71793 Heatwave Transforming Lava Dragon. Still, it feels as though it has been added simply to raise the piece count and therefore the price. It doesn’t add too much to the play value of the model, since you’ll spend most of your time transforming the mech.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer characters —

The minifigures in 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer are a highlight of the set – despite none being exclusive. This model is one of the best ways to pick up Arin, Sora and Baby Riyu, who otherwise only come together in 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time.

The details in these new characters are excellent and each of them stands out compared to previous characters. Their combined appearance in 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer only further proves that this set is particularly accommodating to longtime fans.

Rapton isn’t in a fair fight, but you won’t mind the battle being skewed towards the ninja considering the quality of the minifigures and the build. The new sword and armour elements are great additions to the theme, though they may not be particularly versatile.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer price —

Unfortunately, the price of 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer lets the rest of the set down as it’s too high relative to the contents. Should you only be buying this set for the new characters, it’s not a hard pill to swallow.

However, those planning on getting one or more of these new sets will feel the poor value compared to other models and realistically, it should be lower in all regions for us to recommend it worldwide. The good news is that discounts on LEGO NINJAGO sets are usually not hard to find…

— LEGO NINJAGO 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer pros and cons —

While the price is too high for those getting other Dragons Rising models, anyone planning on picking up just one of the new sets should consider 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer for easy access to the three new main characters.

As a bonus, you’ll be getting a genuinely fun mech or bike depending on what it’s transformed into, but you’ll easily forget about the Imperium vehicle. Still, this is by far the most accommodating and welcoming of the Dragons Rising sets – even if it should be a little cheaper.

— Alternatives to LEGO NINJAGO 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer

They are much higher in price, but for an alternative to 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer while retaining some kind of transforming function, we’d recommend either 71765 Ninja Ultra Combo Mech or 10302 Optimus Prime, though neither will net you Arin, Sora and Baby Riyu.

For those minifigures, maybe consider 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time, despite its equally high price. They are also scattered through the sets, though you’ll end up spending more in any case than just purchasing 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer.
