LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising Dragon Power Spinjitzu sets review

The latest range of LEGO NINJAGO’s spinners is an easy way to collect one of Dragons Rising’s most exciting parts, but that’s about it.

Spinners are a regular part of LEGO NINJAGO’s various waves, though they don’t appear with every new season. It only makes sense that a new series for the theme would receive the spinner treatment, making use of the fresh dragon core pieces for a trio of spinning and adjacent features.

Combine these with exclusive minifigures and on paper, it seems to be a surefire recipe for success. However, that’s not quite the case and your money will probably be better off spent elsewhere.

71777 Kai’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Flip, 71778 Nya’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Drift and 71779 Lloyd’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Spin all include one minifigure, one spinner and a few accessories based on the ninja’s element. While these might appear to be business as usual for NINJAGO spinners, the twist is that each model is designed to perform a different trick.

For Kai, the elongated red curves that protrude from the spinner are supposedly able to be rapidly pushed down to initiate a flip. However, it never quite works, with Kai instead leaping into the air or landing flat on his face.

For Nya, a drifting trick is advertised and while she won’t go far, this trick can be performed to an extent. Her spinner is the plainest of the trio as her trick only requires pushing down on an angled brick at the back.

Lloyd’s is the most traditional of the three spinners, built to be higher than the other two with a curved bottom to help it spin. While Lloyd’s trick works with practice, it’s not easy to grip the spinner properly due to its overall sharp design.

The standard spinning truck that utilises the dragon core elements also doesn’t work as well as you might have hoped. Testing the sets on hard and soft surfaces, the cores weren’t rolling around in their sockets and quickly stopping in their tracks. It’s a shame as the models look great, but fail to perform to their full potential.

Each spinner is joined by an array of accessories including an Imperium droid and a fourth, golden dragon core. This makes it a lot easier to pick up this element, which only otherwise appears in 71795 Temple of the Dragon Energy Cores.

— LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising Dragon Power Spinjitzu set characters —

One of the biggest reasons for buying NINJAGO spinners are the exclusive minifigures, with the characters embracing their elemental powers in some traditionally enticing designs. These usually come with numerous exclusive prints too, which has unfortunately changed with 71777 Kai’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Flip, 71778 Nya’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Drift and 71779 Lloyd’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Spin.

Rather than an exclusive torso, mask and face print, only the mask and torso are exclusive in 71777 Kai’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Flip, 71778 Nya’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Drift and 71779 Lloyd’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Spin. While the alternate visor design on the Dragons Rising minifigures works fine with the elemental minifigure, it’s disappointing to not see three new heads as we have in the past.

The torsos are the most interesting part of each minifigure with an array of energy and some heavy armour as well as transparent arms. However, even that’s not quite enough to impress for these minifigures, marking another sore spot for these three sets.

— LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising Dragon Power Spinjitzu set prices —

LEGO NINJAGO spinners have never been too expensive and for the most part, that continues here. At £8.99 / $10.99 / €9.99, you can see the value in these models in terms of their contents. However, the US price specifically feels too expensive, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them on sale before the end of 2023.

Otherwise, those who like the minifigures and want to try the features for themselves can be confident in picking up at least one, though it’s recommended to start with one and see how you get on. Instead, you might find that your money is better spent elsewhere.

— LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising Dragon Power Spinjitzu sets pros and cons —

The LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising Dragon Power Spinjitzu spinners are an unfortunate low spot for the new wave, with less interesting minifigures than usual and features that don’t entirely work. Nya’s drift power is the most functional, but the dragon cores still don’t roll as freely as they should to be properly played with.

However, due to their mostly inexpensive cost – except in the US – any one of 71777 Kai’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Flip, 71778 Nya’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Drift or 71779 Lloyd’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Spin are a good alternative to 71795 Temple of the Dragon Energy Cores and will ensure that you get the new gold dragon core element.

Ultimately, they’re some of the least functional LEGO NINJAGO spinners ever released and combined with the less exclusive than usual minifigures, you can safely skip these three builds in favour of the other Dragons Rising models.

— Alternatives to LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising Dragon Power Spinjitzu sets

Rather than ordering all three (or just one) of 71777 Kai’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Flip, 71778 Nya’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Drift or 71779 Lloyd’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Spin, you might prefer to put your money towards one of the other LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising sets. In place of just over two of the spinners, you could instead grab 71790 Imperium Dragon Hunter Hound for £18.99 / $19.99 / €20.99.

For a similar feeling of Spinjitzu, paying slightly more than the cost of all three spinners could net you 71791 Zane’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Race Car. You can read our reviews for these sets by clicking here and here.
