LEGO NINJAGO Samurai X mech sketch model revealed

With the excitement of LEGO NINJAGO Legends: Monstrosity, another set sketch has been revealed, putting the spotlight on the Samurai X mech.

Following a wide range of LEGO NINJAGO set concepts being revealed last week for the new Monstrosity series, designer Niek van Slagmaat has revealed another LEGO set sketch model, but this time for a retired build.

The first sketch model for 71775 Nya’s Samurai X MECH opted for a much darker colour scheme and a bigger size overall, but it’s interesting to see that the red X persisted across both the sketch and final versions.

The submarine’s windscreen elements to cover the knee joints also remained for the final version, but otherwise, there are numerous differences between them.

The colour scheme is easily the biggest change, as the colour scheme from the mech in 70642 Killow vs. Samurai X has been adapted for the bigger build. In the transition from sketch model to final set, though, Nya’s colour scheme with light blue, black and gold took over, but you can tell that the two mechs are related with their similar design aspects and element usage.

“It was way too big and ended up being switched to Nya’s mech as the writers continued to work on the story,” wrote Niek van Slagmaat on Bluesky, explaining the changes. “It explored the limits of the new hip/shoulder joint we made.”

While 71775 Nya’s Samurai X MECH is now retired, you can pick up a similarly huge NINJAGO mech, compared to the sketch model, in 71821 Cole’s Titan Dragon Mech. LEGO NINJAGO’s 15th anniversary is coming next year, and early rumours include many more mechs, but they are to be taken with plenty of caution for now.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
