What do LEGO NINJAGO and Pokémon have in common? Green dragon display sets, but one of them is much smaller than the other.
The LEGO Group's original NINJAGO theme and licensed Pokémon offerings have a certain kind of build in common. They both include tall display models of a detailed green dragon, with a single minifigure. 71847 The Guardian Dragon and 72168 Rayquaza may be from entirely different universes, but they share more similarities than differences.
Ahead of the release of 72168 Rayquaza on August 1, Bricks by Mind has shared a look at how the two models stack up next to one another. Note that while 71847 The Guardian Dragon has 1,650 pieces for £139.99 / $149.99 / €149.99, 72168 Rayquaza features 1,083 elements for £119.99 / $129.99 / €129.99.
Where 71847 The Guardian Dragon's staggering silhouette is achieved thanks to its two sprawling wings, 72168 Rayquaza does not need such wings. This impacts the piece count of 72168 Rayquaza. Even with wings, the Pokémon build would still be substantially smaller than the NINJAGO display build.
LEGO Rayquaza is perched on the top of the Sky Pillar, with a triangular, man-made design. 71847 The Guardian Dragon's base is more natural and more detailed, with angular rocks and flowing rivers. However, it does not have much space for its single included minifigure.
This is a distinct area where 72168 Rayquaza has an advantage over 71847 The Guardian Dragon. There is more space for the included Zinna minifigure to stand and be posed. However, there is only really one area for Wu to be placed in the NINJAGO build.
These two minifigures, which are alone in their respective builds, have a comparable level of detail and printing, and Zinnia has a slight lead thanks to wrap-around leg printing and textiles.
The comparison provided by Mind demonstrates that the NINJAGO and new Pokémon sets are going to look fantastic together. 71847 The Guardian Dragon is available right now, and 72168 Rayquaza will arrive on August 1, 2026.
