The new LEGO Ideas The X-Files set is hitting shelves soon, packed to the brim with Easter eggs to the beloved TV series, and here are some of the best.
21369 The X-Files is due to launch in LEGO stores and online from August 1 for LEGO Insiders or August 4 more widely for £179.99 / $199.99 / €199.99. It comes with eight minifigures, 1478 pieces, a forest and an office that is practically overflowing with references.
While we wait for the new set to be released next month, here are some of our favourite references in LEGO Ideas 21369 The X-Files. You can also read our review of the upcoming model by clicking here.
A virus-carrying bee
There's a bee on the back of the office build in LEGO Ideas, and on the forest floor above. While a bee makes some sense in the latter space, these are both likely references to the alien virus-carrying bees seen in multiple episodes, including Zero Sum.
This particular bee print has been featured in six other sets, but now you have to worry that all of these LEGO bees are carrying the alien virus. It's bad news for the guests at 42671 Plant Cafe & Flower Shop and even 76461 Cornish Pixie.
Federal Brick of Investigation
The interior of the office in LEGO Ideas 21369 The X-Files is jam-packed with references, and we'll go over some of the best one by one. The first to catch our eye is the LEGO version of the FBI's logo. We wonder in this universe whether the organisation is known as the Federal Brick of Investigation, not that this would make any sense.
It's not often that government organisations receive LEGO versions, placing this sticker in an extremely limited club. Don't expect that club to grow any time soon, either.
Hidden Frogs and that newspaper name
Whether as a reference to episodes like 'Quagmire' or 'Die Hand Die Vertletz', a newspaper in 21369 The X-Files notifies us of hidden frogs, several of which can be found throughout the build. We won't spoil where they can be found here, but this may be a two-in-one Easter egg.
The LEGO Group's designers love to hide and use frog elements of varying colours across sets. This newspaper headline could well be referring to that trend, as well. The newspaper sticker also hides a third reference. The newspaper is named The Lone Brickman, which is almost certainly referring to The Lone Gunmen. This was a spin-off series based on The X-Files that was cancelled after just 13 episodes.
Sunflower seeds
A personal favourite Easter egg in 21369 The X-Files is the loose sunflower seeds found on the desk and in a drawer. Mulder loves to munch on this snack in the series, and this is another Easter egg in itself. Mulder's habit of eating sunflower seeds is reported to stem from The X-Files creator Chris Carter’s love of the snack.
"[The sunflower seeds thing] actually comes from Chris’ habit of eating them – I myself am not a fan," said David Duchovny in a Q&A for the The X-Files: I Want to Believe movie. "But I will say that when I read this script there weren’t any sunflower seeds, so I told them to put some in. Which was surprising considering I hated having to eat them.”
This is not only a good reference to pay tribute to the character's habits, but also to add something for the series' creator.
A definitely-friendly space face
A grey sticker at the back of the office in 21369 The X-Files has a minifigure head on the moon's surface. This is a reference to the episode Space, where a malevolent face is discovered on the moon that begins to possess people on Earth. The minifigure face on the lunar surface looks a lot friendlier, though.
The titular X-file
The X-Files is not only a cool name for a series, but is based on a categorisation of cases that cannot be solved, also known as X-files. One of these titular files is on Mulder's desk in the new LEGO Ideas set, as it should be.
