LEGO One Piece rumour has some disappointed, others ecstatic

LEGO One Piece is rumoured to be a full theme next year and the anime and LEGO communities are filled with excitement and disappointment.

An intriguing rumour closing out 2024 via 4.chan user Kramer, via the usually reliable Clay Bricks on Instagram, reports that LEGO One Piece will be a new theme in August 2025 with six sets. The rumour is currently unconfirmed but it has sent waves throughout the anime and LEGO communities with a varied mix of reactions and an inevitable joke that has surfaced early.

Over on Reddit, the LEGO side of the community has some concerns over the rumour that the theme will be based on the Netflix adaptation, though the biggest set is also stated by lego_minecraft_goat to be likely based on the anime instead.

“For two seconds I was so happy I couldn’t believe my eyes and then I realised it was the Netflix show,” commented Shalkelp. I guess it will still look pretty close to the manga since the show is quite fateful in terms of designs but I don’t know man.”

Responses to this comment were quick to point out that the Netflix adaptation of the One Piece anime is faithful in terms of its designs, despite a condensed story, though it’s the designs that would be crucial for LEGO models and minifigures.

“Realistically it makes sense for the LEGO Group to adapt scenes from 16 live-action episodes (seasons one and two) compared to 1000+ episodes of anime,” responded NoNefariousness2144. “The Netflix show is more accessible for casual and new fans.”

The One Piece and anime community, including those on X, share this concern and may have reason to be worried should the largest model not be based on the anime as is rumoured by one source.

Aside from the specific source material, another topic of discussion on Reddit was whether this would be the first LEGO theme based on an anime

“They’re approaching it via the Netflix adaptation, but this has to be one of the first anime Lego sets, right?” asked James_the_Third. “The only other one that comes to mind is Speed Racer, but that is also tied into a live-action adaptation.”

Responses to this comment note the likes of 21311 Voltron and the older Avatar: The Last Airbender theme too, though both are western-animated and not widely considered to be true anime series. Should the rumour be accurate, LEGO One Piece would still not be the first anime theme thanks to Speed Racer, but it would be in an exceedingly limited club either way.

Given the name of the series, a joke has appeared in both the LEGO and anime communities frequently already – one that the LEGO Group would be unwise to not capitalise on next year (depending on the rumour’s accuracy).

For now, LEGO One Piece remains a rumour but it’s fair to say that there’s interest in such a partnership and it’s not like the LEGO Group and Netflix are strangers. Take this rumour with a pinch of salt for now just in case and hopefully, an update via rumours or official confirmation will sail in next year.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
