LEGO Replay trial launches in the UK to recycle unwanted bricks

The LEGO Group is bringing its LEGO Replay program to the UK, inviting fans to recycle unwanted bricks to prevent them from turning into waste.

LEGO Replay launched in the US in 2019 and Canada in 2021, and North American families have so far donated more than 230 million LEGO pieces back to the LEGO Group to recycle and reuse elsewhere. The initial stage of the UK trial will see the company test new ways to repurpose unwanted bricks that will benefit learning in schools, such as storage boxes for toys.

According to a 2021 survey, 94% of LEGO fans in the UK give away or sell their unwanted bricks. The remaining 6% is presumably what the LEGO Group is trying to tackle here, ensuring that no bricks ever end up in landfill as part of its wider push for greater sustainability.

“We’re really proud that so many of our fans in the UK already pass the joy of LEGO play to others,” said Tim Brooks, the LEGO Group’s Vice President of Environmental Sustainability. “Our bricks are designed to be durable and safe enough to be handed down from generation to generation to inspire endless play and creativity for many years.

“Piloting LEGO Replay in the UK is an important step on our journey to becoming more circular. We want to rehome, repurpose or recycle every LEGO brick to keep them in play for longer. We hope LEGO Replay will help even more people donate their LEGO bricks with ease, and feel proud they are supporting playful learning for children across the country.”

If you have loose elements you no longer want or need, simply box them up – any box will do – print out a freepost label from LEGO.com/Replay-UK and drop them off at a DPD Drop Shop in England, Scotland or Wales. The LEGO Group says a freepost service for Northern Ireland will be ‘available soon’.

This is a voluntary donation at this stage, although Brooks has previously discussed the potential of turning LEGO Replay into a revenue service for both the company and fans. Watch this space.
