LEGO’s senior design manager explains how Olivia Rodrigo partnership began

The Senior Design Manager for the LEGO Group has revealed that it was the company that sought to work with Olivia Rodrigo, rather than the other way around.

In a discussion with Wallpaper*, Amy Corbett – best known for her role as a judge on the American version of LEGO Masters – shared that it was the LEGO Group that approached the superstar.

The Glaswegian LEGO designer said: “We look for passions. We look for what is going to drive our consumers to have a great building experience by creating something that they love.

“And, of course, music is a huge, universal passion.”

According to Wallpaper*, the LEGO Group believed Rodrigo struck the right balance of attitude and personal style, as well as appealing to a wide demographic – from children who enjoy buildingLEGO sets to adult pop fans who may want to join in.

After 18 months of development, the LEGO Group settled on five sets for the superstar. The cheapest is 43028 Olivia Rodrigo’s Vinyl, priced at £24.99 / $34.99 / €29.99, while the most expensive is 43031 Olivia Rodrigo’s Dual Guitar, priced at £109.99 / $119.99 / €119.99.

However, when development began, Olivia Rodrigo’s latest album, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love’, had not yet been publicly revealed. The set announcement has since aligned with the album’s release cycle.

On this, Corbett added: “We knew there was going to be something exciting coming.

“Olivia is just a really creative powerhouse. She writes her own songs, she plays her own instruments, and she’s such a great role model.”

The news of the pop star’s collaboration with the LEGO Group may come as a surprise to some, as she has never publicly stated that she is a LEGO fan.

However, in June 2024, Olivia Rodrigo was left speechless on stage when a fan handed her a box containing a custom minifigure of her with a guitar.

All five Olivia Rodrigo sets will be available from August 1 and are available for pre-order from LEGO.com. They are being released as part of the LEGO Editions theme, which focuses on celebrities, sports, and pop culture.
