LEGO SMART Play will be allowed in LEGO Ideas projects

LEGO SMART Play is not only allowed in LEGO Ideas projects, but the LEGO Group also encourages submitting models that include it.

Following the reveal of LEGO SMART Play and the various electronic elements associated with it, the LEGO Group has now announced that the platform will be allowed in LEGO Ideas projects that can benefit from it. This means that fans will be able to propose that SMART Bricks, tags and minifigures in their submissions before they reach 10,000 supporters and go in for review.

These submissions will go through the same process as any other, but it’s good to see the LEGO Group encourage more creativity with the platform through the community-voting website.

Early reactions and hands-on impressions of SMART Play from older LEGO enthusiasts have been mixed, and LEGO Ideas generally skews towards an older audience in recent years. By allowing fans the possibility of shaping the future of the platform for themselves, this encouragement may offer the LEGO Group insight into how to more strongly appeal to an older demographic with SMART Play.

Either way, it will be interesting to see what the first projects proposing SMART Play integration on LEGO Ideas are, but the electronic pieces are not yet available in digital building software. Thankfully, they’re not hard to recreate for proposals by using standard tiles, minifigures, and a 2×4 brick with transparent or white plates on top.
