LEGO Sonic designer reveals his favourite part of the theme

The LEGO designer behind the new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets shared his favourite part of the new sets – and how it was created.

Joining the SEGA team on their live stream to discuss the newly-revealed LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme, Frédéric Andre touched on what his favourite element of the sets is, as well as commenting that it was one of the hardest to make.

“My favourite thing from all the sets is the speed sphere,” said Frédéric. “I don’t want to say it was a headache, but it was such a difficult thing to produce. We [had] so many iterations and it took so long to find the right proportions.

“For example, one of the ‘aha’ moments we had was when we discovered the speed sphere was way too big for kids. They couldn’t put in their pockets, so we reduced the size just enough so that the figures can fit inside but you can still play with it.”

The speed sphere is featured in two of the four LEGO Sonic sets currently revealed, 76990 Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge and 76994 Sonic’s Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge. Part of the reason why Frédéric rates it so highly is because of how much care and thought went into its creation.

“In one of the first iterations, the speed sphere was only a wheel,” Frédéric remembered. “Sonic was exposed on the side and we know that everyone would love the minifigure, so we didn’t want him to be damaged every time you use it. That’s why we added the wall.”

All four LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets will be available to buy from August 1.
