LEGO Speed Champions August wave brings the brightest livery yet
An upcoming LEGO Speed Champions set is bringing the brightest livery yet to the theme – but there are some other strong contenders from the past vying for the title.
LEGO Speed Champions boasts over 70 sets across almost a decade of bringing out racing-themed cars from across Formula 1, NASCAR, and more. Car brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Porsche have had their real-life racers turned into realistic six- or eight-stud-wide cars, sticking close to real-life details from the bumper to the spoiler.
That includes some eclectic livery designs. Earlier this week, we got our first look at the LEGO Speed Champions August wave – and 76935 NASCAR Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is quite the eyeful. The livery features not one, not two, but three base colours of bright yellow, purple, and what looks like medium azul on the back. This is rounded off with stickered flames of various colours, along with the usual logos and car branding that we’ve come to expect from LEGO Speed Champions.

The end result is certainly a bright one and perhaps the brightest we’ve ever had in the LEGO Speed Champions theme. There have been some strong contenders since the theme’s inception in 2015, starting as early as 2018 with 75885 Ford Fiesta M-Sport WRC. Although the base blue colour is fairly standard, the contrasting white, along with stickers that cover the entire door and roof makes for an eye-catching overall effect.

Two years later in 2020, 76897 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 also grabbed attention with a bright yellow colour scheme, paired with limited stickers, by LEGO Speed Champions standards at least. Even still, these earlier models didn’t boast the same vibrant colours as later examples.
We’re thinking specifically of 2021’s 76905 Ford GT Heritage Edition and Bronco R and 2024’s 76922 BMW M4 GT3 & BMW M Hybrid V8. With how many cars have had the LEGO Speed Champions treatment over the years, the designers need to find new ways of keeping things fresh.

That’s achieved largely through the colours, with the Ford GT Heritage Edition’s deliberately clashing azul and orange livery and the geometric pattern on both cars in 76922 BMW M4 GT3 & BMW M Hybrid V8. Safe to say, however, none of them quite come close to 76935 NASCAR Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1’s tri-colour look, set to make its on-shelf debut at the beginning of August.

I’m a bit disillusioned by Speed Champions these days.
Once the stickers curl up and fall off the cars don’t look very appealing, and replacement stickers are out of stock after a couple of years.
