LEGO Star Wars 75357 Ghost & Phantom II review

75357 Ghost & Phantom II resurrects a Star Wars Rebels classic, only this time through the lens of Star Wars: Ahsoka – but is its return to the LEGO Star Wars line-up everything we’ve been dreaming of for the past decade?

While those who still own the original LEGO version of the ship from Star Wars Rebels might not need to upgrade, LEGO Star Wars 75357 Ghost & Phantom II is a tremendously well-built set that is a joy to construct, feels satisfying to heft, and works both as a neat display set and a fun plaything.

— LEGO Star Wars 75357 Ghost & Phantom II build —

It’s not uncommon for the LEGO Star Wars theme to revisit familiar classics. Certain Star Wars ships never go out of style, and there are endless opportunities for anyone looking to pick up, say, a LEGO Millennium Falcon at any size or price point.

Ships like The Ghost, the Falcon-esque flying home hub from the animated show Star Wars Rebels, aren’t reworked quite as often. It’s been nearly a decade since the last minifigure-scale version of the ship (not including an adorable Microfighter), but with The Ghost’s role in Disney+ series Star Wars: Ahsoka, a familiar fan favourite has returned with a new lick of paint.

Those LEGO fans who already own the earlier 75053 The Ghost might not find the new build to be different enough to warrant double-dipping. Both the older set and the new 75357 Ghost & Phantom II are around the same size and look tremendously similar on display. While diehard Rebels fans may well enjoy getting both, it’s hard to necessarily justify 75357 Ghost & Phantom II for anyone who has already been there, done that with this particular ship.

For anyone else, though, the new set is an absolute must-have. Genuinely fun to put together, with a satisfying if not particularly taxing build experience, 75357 Ghost & Phantom II sits beautifully on a shelf, and has enough play features to make it worthwhile for anyone looking to fly it around the living room making explosion noises.

For what is basically an I Can’t Believe it’s not The Millennium Falcon, a lot of care and attention has gone into filling the set with nifty alcoves, secrets, and details that make this feel like a cut above most LEGO Star Wars starships. There’s only so much in a ship of this scale that can be decorated, but there doesn’t feel like any wasted space.

While it would be nice if 75357 Ghost & Phantom II were a little larger, and while the price point does feel uncomfortably high given the lack of breathing room, this dense build is fun to put together, fun to play with, and fun to put on display.

Familiarity with either Ahsoka or Rebels is not a requirement for enjoyment. Any fan of LEGO Star Wars will have a blast with this set.

— LEGO Star Wars 75357 Ghost & Phantom II characters —

The minifigures included in 75357 Ghost & Phantom II are mostly solid, with one awkward exception.

The selection of characters may disappoint some fans of Rebels – as the set ties in with Ahsoka rather than the early animated show, popular heroes like Ezra Bridger and even Sabine Wren have been omitted in favour of a couple of New Republic officers who aren’t perhaps as inherently interesting as previous passengers on the ship.

First Officer Hawkins and Lieutenant Beyta are perfectly fine additions to the set – characters that may well prove useful for army builders, even if otherwise they feel a little generic in their execution.

That said, it’s nice to see the LEGO Group providing further diversity in the set, both with the choice of human minifigure, and the fact that the set features a Mon Calamari headpiece, which is always a welcome addition.

Hera Syndulla’s minifigure is the star of the show, though, with an accurate costume, leg printing, and a set of Twi’lek lekku that look perfect. This minifigure will likely be the most coveted of the set in years to come, and this will be entirely deserved.

The same, sadly, cannot be said for Jacen Syndulla. The minifigure’s hair is entirely the wrong colour compared with his on-screen counterpart – rather than brunette, he should have green hair, to match his mother’s skin. (Don’t ask us how genetics works in a galaxy far, far away.)

Finally, the set comes with C1-10P, more affectionately known as Chopper. The pint-sized astromech is an excellent piece, and it’s a welcome touch that the character’s legs and body are recreated with the same shorter elements that were used for the original wave of Rebels sets, rather than the larger standard astromech body and legs that are designed around R2-D2’s proportions.

— LEGO Star Wars 75357 Ghost & Phantom II price —

At £149.99 in the UK, $159.99 in the US and €169.99 in the EU, 75357 Ghost & Phantom II suffers from the same uncomfortably high pricing as many recent LEGO Star Wars sets.

This price is difficult to justify for someone just looking for a Star Wars playset, as it’s a lot of money to spend on something that could potentially end up broken into pieces and scattered under couch cushions. Similarly, only a little more money would get a LEGO Star Wars fan one of the smaller Ultimate Collector Series sets, which are perhaps a better fit for display.

That said, for what it delivers, and given the high prices across this range, 75357 Ghost & Phantom II certainly doesn’t feel overpriced. The set offers a lot of fun build time and has a satisfying weight to it, so this definitely doesn’t feel like the worst value for money in the LEGO Star Wars range at present. Anyone who is in a position to drop the full retail price for this set will feel satisfied with their purchase.

— LEGO Star Wars 75357 Ghost & Phantom II pros and cons —

75357 Ghost & Phantom II is one of the best of the current crop of LEGO Star Wars sets. While the inside of the ship lacks space, the finished model feels dense and sturdy, and works both as a display piece or a plaything. This is one LEGO set that is well worth picking up for any fans of Ahsoka or Star Wars Rebels, and has something to offer for wider fans of LEGO Star Wars as well.

— Alternatives to LEGO Star Wars 75357 Ghost & Phantom II —

While the obvious alternative to 75357 Ghost & Phantom II is the previous 75053 Ghost, that set isn’t exactly easy to come by. Those looking for Star Wars Rebels minifigures may wish to check out 75362 Ahsoka Tano’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle, which comes with Sabine Wren (as well as the eponymous Ahsoka).

Another option is 75257 Millennium Falcon, a set at around the same price point and piece count, which offers a similarly-sized starfighter that can be either played with or displayed, but which has the greater familiarity afforded by a set based on a ship from the original Star Wars trilogy.
