A certain character in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past represented a unique challenge for the show’s creative team.
LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past finally drops out of hyperspace on September 19, with four all-new animated episodes set in a mixed-up brick-built universe far, far away.
In addition to some serious deep cuts, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past will also introduce larger characters based on such models as 75371 Chewbacca and 40539 Ahsoka Tano, a now-retired LEGO BrickHeadz release.

In a new interview with Fantha Tracks, the show’s co-writers and executive producers, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, have discussed the challenges involved with bringing such characters to life and why they were essential to the story.
“When we had this idea for what this second series would be,” Benji revealed, “it was really about exploring weirder corners of the fandom than we’ve ever seen before. One of the areas was BrickHeadz – we hadn’t seen those come to life in LEGO animation before and it’s such an iconic thing.
“Ahsoka we wanted to figure out a way to do, no matter what, because she’s such an awesome character and Ashley [Eckstein] is amazing. The Ahsoka BrickHeadz was a fan vote back in the day, so that really had to be our BrickHeadz character, it’s the one that comes from the fandom.”

While that idea may have sounded doable in principle, the, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past team still had to convince Lucasfilm and the LEGO Group, as well as work out a way to animate the much larger character.
“Thankfully, LEGO and Lucasfilm understood,” said Benji. “We were worried that they were going to say no because we haven’t seen a minifigure and a BrickHeadz interact with each other before. What does that even mean?”

“That also required figuring out how to animate her,” Dan added. “How does she move? How do you keep the fidelity of the BrickHeadz itself? One of the things that’s great about a sequel, but that’s also challenging about a sequel, is what are the areas we can top ourselves or surprise people?
“We found that bringing in different kinds of LEGO was a really surprising thing that people will hopefully get excited about.”
All four episodes of LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past will be available to stream on Disney+ from September 19.
