LEGO Star Wars rangefinder update detailed by designer
The newly redesigned LEGO Star Wars rangefinder piece update has been explained and detailed by a 75409 Jango Fett’s Starship designer.
Next month’s new Ultimate Collector Series 75409 Jango Fett’s Starship has many exciting features, but the new rangefinder is one of the highlights of the nearly 3,000-piece set. It launches on May 1, 2025, for LEGO Insiders or May 4 for everyone else, complete with the updated rangefinder piece.
The classic element has been designed to be much more accurate, and one of the designers behind the May the 4th model has spoken about the redesign and explained why now is the right time for such an update.
“The rangefinder has had a nice update. It’s much more accurate to the range finders that the clones and Jango use,” explained senior graphic designer Madison O’Neil.

“Part of that decision came about because up until now, the range finder was part of a family mould, so you get it in a bag with three other range finders and some visors. And of course, in every set, we don’t need all of those elements, so to kind of save on plastic waste and things, we decided to bring it down to just the rangefinder piece.”
Opting to both upgrade the detail in the rangefinder element while decreasing the additional parts it comes with to zero is an interesting decision, leaving the LEGO Group with the option to update the visor too at some point in the future.
The point on reducing waste is well made, but it also decreases minifigure customisation. In 75409 Jango Fett’s Starship, that’s not an important detail since it’s intended for accurate display, but this is not the case in every LEGO Star Wars set.

“One exciting thing with Jango is that we have some arm prints on him this time,” continued Madison. “So that is, I believe, a first for Jango. For Jango, of course, we’re including the wig in addition to a helmet. For Boba, it’s all updated prints as well. There are no reused prints or anything.”
