Upcoming LEGO Star Wars set is a sequel 24 years in the making

Some fans will have been waiting nearly a quarter of a century for an upcoming LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary set to be released.

We had our first look yesterday at two new LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary sets arriving on May 1, 2024, thanks to listings posted by an official Australian LEGO Certified Store. Both the previously rumoured 75380 Mos Espa Podrace Diorama and 75381 Droideka will arrive on that date, with the latter being nearly a quarter of a century in the making.

While numerous smaller brick-built Droidekas (or Destroyer Droids) have appeared in other sets and as free gifts with the likes of LEGO Star Wars magazine, 75381 Droideka will be the first dedicated set based on the Trade Federation creation since 2000.

One of the first LEGO Technic sets to focus on an Episode I character was 8002 Destroyer Droid, released alongside 8000 Pit Droid and 8001 Battle Droid. Standing over 28cm high and comprised of 567 pieces, the brick-built ‘bot was a surprisingly accurate version of a Droideka and could actually be folded up and rolled.

That was accomplished by the inclusion of a lot of rubber bands connected to some of the Technic pieces, so that 8002 Destroyer Droid could be displayed in both open and closed modes, although the action feature was a bit hit or miss. It appears as if the 583-piece 75381 Droideka can also assume a rolled-up ball shape, although the rubber bands and springing open functionality may well be missing from the upcoming LEGO Star Wars release.

We’ll be able to find out just how well 75381 Droideka stacks up against the older 8002 Destroyer Droid when the former is released on May 1, 2024. We’ll be sure to confirm the full international prices for the LEGO Star Wars build as soon as we have any official details.
