LEGO Star Wars Tantive IV 2024 set may not be a diorama after all

Conflicting details on next year’s rumoured LEGO Star Wars Tantive IV set suggest it may not be a diorama after all – which would make slightly more sense for its reported price tag.

An initial list of LEGO Star Wars 2024 sets positioned 75387 Tantive IV Boarding Diorama as another 18+ set, joining the likes of 75330 Dagobah Jedi Training Diorama, 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama and 75353 Endor Speeder Chase Diorama. The set would presumably have followed in the footsteps of those sets by being built on a black base, complete with a printed tile with a relevant quote from A New Hope.

There were a couple of peculiarities in that story, though: the first being that the set is apparently due for release on March 1, while the other rumoured diorama – 75380 Boonta Eve Podrace Diorama – is said to launch in May. The sets in the first two waves of the LEGO Star Wars Diorama Collection arrived on shelves concurrently, so staggering next year’s by two months seemed odd.

The second was the suggested price tag for 75387 Tantive IV Boarding Diorama, which Promobricks initially reported as being just €54.99. That would have made it the cheapest LEGO Star Wars diorama to date, and given the number of parts required for the black base, would not have left much wiggle room for the bulk of the model (or its minifigures). According to brickmerge.de, however, 75387 will actually be marked 8+ rather than 18+.

That immediately takes it out of the diorama discussion, because the black-base sets are targeted first and foremost towards adults – which means they’re all labelled 18+ and come in uniform black boxes. As a result, we may be looking at a more conventional playset for 75837, perhaps building out into a bigger slice of the Tantive IV’s hallways than would otherwise have been possible within the confines of a detailed diorama.

We’ve already pointed out how the LEGO Group might look to last year’s 75324 Dark Trooper Attack for the template for any Tantive IV boarding set, which would presumably replicate the opening scenes of A New Hope – complete with Darth Vader, Stormtroopers and Rebel Fleet Troopers. But that Mandalorian model only includes 166 pieces, so 75387’s reported piece count of 502 gives the LEGO Star Wars team much more room to play with.

From that perspective, the possibilities for this set are actually much greater than they would have been within a diorama. It’s still only expected to cost €54.99, so we’re not anticipating Princess Leia and R2-D2 alongside Vader and the troopers (though it would be neat), but a substantial Tantive IV set would be very cool to see either way.

Brickmerge has also listed slightly different prices to Promobricks for some of the other rumoured LEGO Star Wars 2024 sets, including 75380 Boonta Eve Podrace Diorama at €79.99 instead of €69.99.
