LEGO Super Mario seems destined to avoid minifigures forever

LEGO Super Mario still seems set to not debut minifigures with new rumours indicating that the theme is exploring everything else instead.

The LEGO Super Mario range has been diverse over the past five years, ranging from the familiar level expansion packs, brick-built consoles, in-game item recreations with homages inside and much more but there’s one thing the theme still hasn’t covered – minifigures.

Despite Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda immediately receiving LEGO minifigures as soon as those collaborations began, the likes of Mario, Luigi and Peach still have yet to receive minifigures with no suitable sets for them in the theme. Rumour has it that this won’t change anytime soon.

According to the reliable lego_minecraft_goat (who advises packing an extra pinch of salt for this rumour), the reported $169.99 72037 will be a Mario Kart model, filling in for the usual huge LEGO Icons vehicle set. It seems likely that this would be an upscaled version of 72032 Standard Kart or the new take on the Kart seen in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game. Most importantly though, this is unlikely to include any Mario minifigures since it won’t be to scale with them.

While the likes of 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine have had minifigures based on licenses in downscaled vehicle models, there was precedent for Back to the Future minifigures whereas the Nintendo theme has yet to budge on them for their most popular franchise.

Also confirmed for later this year is another brick-built console recreation in the form of a LEGO Game Boy. This seems most likely to follow the same path as 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System rather than 10306 Atari 2600 with no minifigures of any kind.

Despite the fifth anniversary of LEGO Super Mario this year, we’ll have to continue to sit and wait for any sign of Mario minifigures according to the current rumoured and confirmed future of the theme. You can pick up Nintendo minifigures across 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 and LEGO Animal Crossing in the meantime.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

It kills me; Mario is one of my favorite IPs, and every non-minifig release just feels like a colossal waste of time and effort

psst, they’re doing this entirely to prove they can handle the pokemon license. this is the long game.

personally I wouldn’t consider buying any Mario Lego product as long as they’re using those giant duplo looking characters. I think it really takes away from the aesthetic if you store them around regular Lego sets to build. I think the regular Lego Nintendo system looks great but other than that all the other Mario Nintendo products just don’t look that good.

Isn’t Toad a minifig, though?

Oh, stop with the electronic figures, Nintendo. We need minifigs, not those plastic nonsense.
