LEGO teases Wicked collab as rumours swirl of full theme

The LEGO Group is teasing a collaboration with the upcoming Wicked movie, as rumours swirl that an entire theme of sets could be in the works.

A first trailer for Wicked – the movie based on a play based on a book based on characters from adifferentbook and its movie adaptation – debuted during last night’s Super Bowl, and the LEGO Group wasted no time in teasing some kind of collab over on Twitter, with a sly reference to the franchise’s biggest musical number: “Wonder if LEGO could defy gravity…”

If the green heart emoji appended to that tweet leaves little room for doubt, a follow-up post this morning referencing the fact that bricks are green too all but cements some kind of LEGO x Wicked partnership. And according to Instagram user brick_clicker, we’re not just looking at a one-off set, but an entire wave of models inspired by the Wizard of Oz spin-off.

In fact, brick_clicker claims that Wicked is the identity of the rumoured theme previously codenamed Bright, one of two new LEGO themes thought to be on the way in 2024. The four sets on the cards are said to range in price from $29.99 to $89.99 in the US, and will apparently arrive on shelves on October 1 – almost two months ahead of Wicked’s premiere on November 27.

The first part of what’s currently slated to be a duology, Wicked is helmed by Jon M. Chu in the director’s seat and stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Jonathan Bailey. (Good news for anyone hoping for another Jeff Goldblum minifigure, and even better news for all the Ariana stans out there.) Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, the future Wicked Witch of the West, in what’s effectively the character’s origin story.

Goldblum plays the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, while Dorothy Gale will also make an appearance of some sort. Details on the rumoured LEGO sets are non-existent at this point, but the safe money is on a play theme anchored around minifigures. It wouldn’t be the first time the LEGO Group has tackled the Wizard of Oz, as characters from the movie appeared in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, The LEGO Batman Movie and LEGO Dimensions – including the Wicked Witch herself…

While the LEGO Group is freely teasing a Wicked collab, remember that details such as set numbers and prices are still only rumours at this stage. You can check out those figures in the table below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
